摘要:
A METHOD FOR THE REMOVAL OF EXCESS COLORED LIQUID PENETRANT AND THE SIMULTANEOUS DEVELOPMENT OF COLOR INDICATIONS, THEREBY ELIMINATING BOTH THE SEPARATE STEP OF FIRST REMOVING EXCESS PENETRANT BY EMULSIFICATION AND WATER WASHING, AND THE SEPARATE SUBSEQUENT STEP OF APPLYING A DEVELOPER. THE PRESENT METHOD EMPLOYES A PIGMENTED AQUEOUS REMOVER-DEVELOPER COMPOSITION CONTAINING A NONVOLAITLE SURFACTANT AND PREFERABLY A GLYCOL-TYPE OF DEGELLING AGENT. THE REMOVER ITSELF SERVES TO REMOVE THE EXCESS OF COLORED LIQUID PENETRANT FROM THE SURFACE OF THE WORKPIECE WITHOUT REMOVING ANY PENETRANT ENTRAPPED IN SURFACE DISCONTINUITIES, AND AT THE SAME TIME A PORTION OF THE COMPOSITION REMAINS AS A RESIDUAL SURFACE FILM OF THE SURFACTANTS AND PIGMENT TO DEVELOP THE COLOR INDICATIONS.
摘要:
A liquid composition for the removal of residual films of an oil-based colored penetrant, especially a fluorescent penetrant, from the surface of a workpiece undergoing tests for surface discontinuities. The composition is effective in a 75 to 100 percent concentrated form when used in a dip, or dip and drain, or a static form of application to the residual penetrant film by dissolving or emulsifying the penetrant so that it can be flushed off with water alone. When the concentrate is diluted with water to a range of between 15 and 75 percent vigorous agitation is required, while spray applications are recommended for concentrations as low as 0.2 percent, or preferably from 0.5 to 15 percent. Spraying causes the removal of the residual penetrant as a result of impingement, turbulence and displacement. Warm or hot water is used in diluting the concentrate to bring the temperature of the diluted composition to between about 100* and 140* F., and preferably between 100* and 120* F., to facilitate the substantially complete removal of any residual film of a fluorescent penetrant, especially from rough surfaces. My composition, as a concentrate consists essentially of a liquid, water-soluble nonionic surfactant, or mixture of surfactants; a water-immiscible aromatic hydrocarbon solvent having a KB value of at least 70; and a normally liquid, water-miscible glycolether type of coupler. The resulting homogeneous clear liquid composition is preferably one that is infinitely miscible with water at between 40* and 140* F. without exhibiting a cloud effect within those temperature limits.

摘要:
A liquid remover composition for the removal of a film of excess liquid penetrant from the surface of a workpiece undergoing inspection for surface discontinuities. The remover composition is a two-phase liquid in which the continuous phase is water and dispersed phase is a liquid immiscible with water but miscible with the liquid penetrant, and is present in an amount from about 0.2 percent to 10 percent by weight, or higher, of the remover composition. The dispersed phase is in very finely divided form suspended in the water when applied with vigorous turbulence against the film of excess penetrant to be removed. Preferably, the dispersed phase liquid is of a substantially different density from water so that separation can be easily effected, after removal of the penetrant from the surface, between the water and the admixed penetrant and dispersed phase liquid so as to facilitate separate use or disposal thereof without pollution problems.

A WATER-EMULSIFIABLE LIQUID COMPOSITION HAVING A NONAQUEOUS OILY LIQUID PORTION AND AN EMULSIFYING AGENT OR SURFACTANT MIXED THEREWITH TO RENDER THE COMPOSITION WATER-EMULSIFIABLE OR WATER-WASHABLE, AND ADDITONALLY CONTAINING A CYCLIC TERPENE ALCOHOL, E.G. ALPHA TERPINEOL, OR A MIXTURE OF ISOMERIC TERTIARY AND DSECONDARY CYCLIC TERPENE ALCOHOLS, TO INCREASE THE WATER TOLERANCE OF SAID COMPOSITION TO SUCH AN EXTENT THAT A STABLE, CLEAR OR TRANSIENT LIQUID EMULSION IS FORMED WHEN AS MUCH AS 5 TO 100% BY VOLUME OF WATER IS INCOROPORATED INTO SAID COMPOSITION. THE WATER-EMULSIBIABLE LIQUID COMPOSITION IS PARTICULARLY ADAPTED FOR USE IN THE PENETRANT METHOD OF NONDESTRUCTIVE TESTING, EITHER AS AN EMULSIFIER OR AS A PENETRANT (WHEN HAVING DISSOLVED THEREIN A DYE OR DYES TO GIVE THE PENETRANT COLOR UNDER "WHITE" OR "BLACK" LIGHT).
