Non-destructive testing system in which a laser beam is impinged on an oscillating mirror to produce on a surface of a part a scanning spot moved in forward and reverse scan directions while the part is moved in a transverse direction. Photocell means respond to light from the surface of the part to develop defectindicating information signals which are applied through bandpass filter and analog gate means to a main memory comprising a plurality of serially connected LSI shift-register units, the outputs of which are applied to shift-register sections of an auxiliary memory, each section comprising a plurality of stages. The stages of the auxiliary memory are connected to decoder circuitry including parallel to serial converters and presettable counters, to develop output signals in response to predetermined patterns. Clock signals for the memory are also applied to a sweep generator which generates a staircase signal applied to a drive system for the oscillating mirror.

Billet-handling system in which a plurality of spaced arms pivotal on a common horizontal axis carry electromagnets having faces engageable with longitudinally spaced portions of a vertical face of a billet on an edge portion of a horizontal support table, the arms being rotatable to move the billet sidewise to a position over receiving rollers which move the billet lengthwise. The magnets are supported on the arms through a pivotal connection which is preferably loose and the arms are independently operated through fluid-operating means, with the magnets being independently movable into firm engagement with the billet even though the billet is twisted or cambered. Each arm is preferably provided with a surface which underlies the billet during the pickoff and transfer operation.

A METHOD FOR DETECTING FLAWS AND OTHER SURFACE DISCONTINUITIES BY THE LIQUED PENETRANT TECHNIQUE WHEREIN THE DEVELOPER COMPOSITION FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF COLOR INDICATIONS IS A LIQUID VEHICLE COMNPRISING WATER AND A WATER-MISCIBLE ORGANIC SOLVENT, AND CONTAINS WATER-SOLUBLE CRYSTALLINE SUBSTANCES DISSOLVED THEREIN. UPON EVAPORATION OF THE LIQUED VEHICLE, THE SOLUTE CRYSTALLIZES OUT TO FORM A LAYER OF FINE CRYSTALS ON THE SURFACE UNDERGOING TEST. THE PENETRANT USED IN CONNECTION WITH MY METHOD PREFERABLY CONTAINS A VISIBLE OR FLOURESCENT DYE DISSOLVED THEREIN AND IS OF AN OILY-TYPE WHICH PREFERABLY IS NOT SELF-EMULSIFYING AND IS SUBSTANTIALLY FREE OF ANY ADDED EMULSIFYING AGENT BUT MY METHOD IS APPLICABLE WHERE THE PENETRANTS ARE WATER-WASHABLE. THE DEVELPOER COMPOSITION CAN OPTIONALLY INCLUDE SURFACTANTS AND FILM-FORMING INGREDIENTS, SEQUESTERING AGENTS FOR USE WITH HARD WATER, AND CORROSION INHIBITING AGENTS, BUT IN THE ABSENCE OF THESE OPTIONAL INGREDIENTS THE LIQUID DEVELOPER COMPOSITION UPON EVAPORATION OF THE LIQUID VEHICLE FORMS A PENETRANT PERMEABLE LAYER OF FINE CRYSTALS THAT CAUSE THE PENETRANT TO BE DRAWN BY CAPILLARITY OR OTHERWISE INTO THE CRYSTAL LAYER TO FORM FLAW INDICATIONS OF HIGH FIEDLITY AND RESOLUTION THAT CAN EASILY BE DETECTED UPON INSPECTION. THE REAMINING LAYER AFTER INSPECTIN CAN BE ADEQUATELY CLEANED OFF BY THE USE OF WATER ALONE. AN ADVANTAGE OF MY LIQUID DEVELOPER COMPOSITION IS THAT IT CAN BE SPRAYED ON TO THE SURFACE UNDERGOING TEST AND DUE TO ITS RELATIVELY GREATER VOLATILITY THAN WATER, IT EVAPORATES MORE QUICKLY.

A METHOD FOR THE REMOVAL OF EXCESS COLORED LIQUID PENETRANT AND THE SIMULTANEOUS DEVELOPMENT OF COLOR INDICATIONS, THEREBY ELIMINATING BOTH THE SEPARATE STEP OF FIRST REMOVING EXCESS PENETRANT BY EMULSIFICATION AND WATER WASHING, AND THE SEPARATE SUBSEQUENT STEP OF APPLYING A DEVELOPER. THE PRESENT METHOD EMPLOYES A PIGMENTED AQUEOUS REMOVER-DEVELOPER COMPOSITION CONTAINING A NONVOLAITLE SURFACTANT AND PREFERABLY A GLYCOL-TYPE OF DEGELLING AGENT. THE REMOVER ITSELF SERVES TO REMOVE THE EXCESS OF COLORED LIQUID PENETRANT FROM THE SURFACE OF THE WORKPIECE WITHOUT REMOVING ANY PENETRANT ENTRAPPED IN SURFACE DISCONTINUITIES, AND AT THE SAME TIME A PORTION OF THE COMPOSITION REMAINS AS A RESIDUAL SURFACE FILM OF THE SURFACTANTS AND PIGMENT TO DEVELOP THE COLOR INDICATIONS.
