Abstract: Various embodiments set forth eye tracking systems. In some embodiments, an eye tracking system includes a polarization volume hologram (PVH) combiner having a rolling k-vector design that provides relatively wide coverage of users whose eyeglasses prescriptions can vary. The PVH combiner can further include (1) fiducial regions created by differential patterning that generate dark regions in images captured of an eye, and/or (2) multiple regions that diffract light at angles to produce different perspectives in the captured images. The dark regions and/or different perspectives can be used to calibrate eye tracking. In addition, the PVH combiner can include off-axis lens regions that generate glints for the eye tracking.

Abstract: A switchable waveplate includes a substrate, a first electrode layer on the substrate, an alignment layer on the first electrode layer and including alignment patterns formed thereon, a liquid crystal layer on the alignment layer, and a second electrode layer on the liquid crystal layer. The alignment patterns are determined based on angles of interest at a plurality of regions of the switchable waveplate. The liquid crystal layer includes liquid crystal molecules that are arranged according to the alignment patterns and are pre-tilted when no electric field is applied to the liquid crystal layer. The first electrode layer and the second electrode layer are configured to apply electric fields of different magnitudes to a plurality of zones of the switchable waveplate.

Abstract: An optical subassembly for switchably focusing or redirecting a light beam may include a polarization element having a polarization-selective beam redirection/focusing property, a first switchable polarization rotator upstream of the polarization element, and a second switchable polarization rotator downstream of the polarization element. A polarizer may be provided immediately downstream of the second switchable polarization rotator. The first and second switchable polarization rotators may be operated in counterphase, so as to mutually offset dependence of angle and wavelength characteristics of the polarization rotators on the switching state of the polarization rotators.

Abstract: A multi-focal system includes a display pixel array, a pixelated polarization array, and a Pancharatnam-Berry phase (PBP) lens. The display pixel array includes a first display pixels generating first display light and a second display pixels generating second display light. The pixelated polarization array has first pixels and second pixels. The first pixels are aligned with the first display pixels to generate a first polarized light having a first polarization orientation. The second pixels are aligned with the second display pixels to generate a second polarized light having a second polarization orientation different from the first polarization orientation. The PBP lens is configured to focus the first polarized light having the first polarization orientation to a first focal length and focus the second polarized light having the second polarization orientation to a second focal length that is greater than the first focal length.
