Abstract: A display system includes a source of unpolarized image light, and a stack of polarization-selective optical elements operable to switchably convert the unpolarized image light into two orthogonally polarized light beams, each of which being switchable in at least one beam characteristic. An output polarizer selects one of the two orthogonally polarized light beams for providing to a user. A depolarizer may be disposed between an electronic display emitting polarized light and the stack. The depolarizer may be in the form of an LC bilayer with randomized in-plane optic axis.

Abstract: A display device includes an image source, a holographic relay, and a holographic image combiner in an off-axis configuration. The holographic relay may include a pair of freeform holographic reflectors relaying light of the image source to an intermediate image plane. The holographic image combiner receives and redirects the relayed light from the holographic relay, forming an image in angular domain at an eyebox of the display device, the image in angular domain corresponding to the image in linear domain generated by the image source.

Abstract: A display assembly with dielectric filters is presented herein. The display assembly includes a light source assembly, a dielectric filter array, and a modulation layer. The light source assembly generates laser light in multiple color channels, and each color channel is associated with a different laser emission spectrum. The dielectric filter array includes respective sets of reflective dielectric filters for each color channel. Each set of reflective dielectric filters is matched to the different laser emission spectrum such that reflective dielectric filters in each set transmit light in the different laser emission spectrum and reflect light outside of the different laser emission spectrum. The modulation layer is positioned between a first electrode layer patterned on the dielectric filter array and a second electrode layer. The modulation layer modulates light from the dielectric filter array based on emission instructions applied via the first and second electrode layers to form an image.

Abstract: An optical lens assembly to accept various illumination ellipticity profiles as angle of incidence (AOI) varies is provided. The optical lens assembly may include an optical stack, such as pancake optics. The optical lens assembly may also include a switchable optical element communicatively coupled to a controller. The optical lens assembly may further include an optical element, such as a Pancharatnam-Berry phase (PBP) lens, also known as a geometric phase lens (GPL). In some examples, the switchable optical element may be a switchable have wave plate, which may be configured, via application of optical power by the controller, so that the optical lens assembly may accept varying illumination ellipticity profiles as angle of incidence (AOI) increases.

Abstract: A display device includes a diffractive optical element and a tunable light source operable in different states including a first state and a second state. The tunable light source provides first light having a first wavelength while the tunable light source is in the first state and second light having a second wavelength, distinct from the first wavelength, while the tunable light source is in the second state. The first wavelength and the second wavelength correspond to a first color band. The diffractive optical element is positioned to receive and redirect the first light and receive and redirect the second light. The diffractive optical element has a first focal length for the first light and a second focal length, distinct from the first focal length, for the second light.
