摘要:
Polyolefins prepared by polymerization of olefins using Ziegler catalysts in which the transition metal compound is a compound of vanadium are treated in the molten state with a C2-C4 alkanol alone or in combination with a basic compound for decoloration of the polymers.

Ethylene polymers are made by bringing ethylene under polymerization conditions at low pressures into contact with a catalyst comprising a titanium halide, a vanadium halide and an organoaluminum compound. Molecular weight distribution of the polymers is controlled by reacting the titanium halide, the vanadium halide and the organoaluminum compound in such proportions that the Al/(Ti+V) ratio is between about 0.1 and 0.5 and admixing the resulting catalyst complex with a mixture of an alkylaluminum sesquiethoxide and a trialkylaluminum prior to contacting of ethylene therewith.

Control of particle size of olefin polymers produced by gasphase polymerization of at least one olefin using Ziegler-type catalysts deposited on solid supports in a fluidized-solids operation is effected by controlling the particle size of the catalyst support.

An electrolytic process is described for making certain bis(halometal)methanes such as bis(dichloroaluminum)methane, Cl2AlCH2AlCl2, which is a new compound, and these compounds can be combined with transition metal compounds such as VOCl3 to make very active catalysts for polymerizing olefinic compounds such as ethylene. In the electrolytic process boron, a Group II, Group III A or Group IV A metal, e.g., aluminum, is used as an anode with an electrolyte such as HOAlCl2 in the presence of a methylene dihalide such as CH2Cl2 or a gem dihalide which does not readily dehydrohalogenate or alkylate. It is preferred to carry out the electrolysis in the presence of ethylene or another olefinic compound to promote conductivity. Also, it is preferred that all reactants be substantially free of water, except for small known amounts of water which may be added to promote electrolysis. Also, it is preferred to blanket the electrolysis with ethylene which also serves to promote conductivity, or an inert gas to exclude moisture, oxygen and other undesirable materials. The catalysts polymerize olefinic compounds to liquid or solid polymers depending on the particular catalyst used and the olefin being polymerized. The catalysts are promoted or modified by small amounts of water or other electron donor compounds.

AN ELECTROLYTIC PROCESS IS DESCRIBED FOR MAKING CERTAIN BIS-(HALOMETAL) METHANES SUCH AS BIS(DICHLOROALUMINUM) METHANE, CL2ALCH2ALCHL2, WHICH IS A NEW COMPOUND, AND THESE COMPOUNDS CAN BE COMBINED WITH TRANSITION METAL COMPOUNDS SUCH AS VOC13 TO MAKE VERY ACTIVE CATALYSTS FOR POLYMERIZING OLEFINIC COMPOUNDS SUCH AS ETHYLENE. IN THE ELECTROLYTIC PROCESS BORON, A GROUP II, GROUP III-A OR GROUP IV-A METAL, E.G., ALUMINUM, IS USED AS AN ANODE WITH AN ELECTROLYTE SUCH AS HOALCL2 IN THE PRESENCE OF A METHYLENE DIHALIDE SUCH AS CH2CL2 OR A GEM DIHALIDE WHICH DOES NOT READILY DEHYDROHALOGENATE OR ALKYLATE. ALSO, IT IS PREFERED TO BLANKET THE ELECTROLYSIS WITH ETHYLENE WHICH ALSO SERVES TO PROMOTE CONDUCTIVITY, OR AN INERT GAS TO EXCLUDE MOISTURE, OXYGEN AND OTHER UNDESIRABLE MATERIALS.
摘要:
Catalysts useful for making ethylene polymers by polymerizing ethylene alone or with a comonomer in the presence of hydrogen are described. They consist essentially of a mixture of (1) a bromo and/or ioda aluminum compound, preferably of the formula WHEREIN X is a halogen atom with at least one X being a bromine or iodine atom or a mixture of such compounds with each other and p is O or 1 and (2) a compound of a transition metal of Groups III-B, IV-B, V-B, VI-B, VII-B, VIII or 1-B of the Periodic Table, preferably vanadium. The combined bromine or iodine renders the catalyst composition more sensitive to hydrogen employed for molecular weight control so that the ethylene polymers which are obtained at a given hydrogen partial pressure have a higher melt index than those which are obtained with the same type of organoaluminum compound which does not contain the specified bromine or iodine constituent. The polymerization can be carried out in the presence of an inert solvent such as hexane, or a halogenated compound such as dichloromethane or dibromomethane, at a pressure from about 2 to about 10 atmospheres and employing an electrondonating compound such as t-butanol or water to modify the catalyst.
