    摘要: A portable radio is provided that performs an impedance measurement to determine a radio frequency (RF) load type connected to an antenna port of the portable radio. The portable radio includes an impedance measurement circuit and a tunable matching circuit operatively coupled thereto through an RF switch A sweep generator injects an LMR frequency sweep to the RF load during non-transmit or non-receive time slots for the impedance measurement. The tunable matching circuit is configured as a radio frequency (RF) bypass during the impedance measurement, thereby enabling the impedance measurement circuit to directly measure the impedance of the RF load coupled to the RF port and identify the RF load as either a land mobile radio (LMR) antenna or equipment (wideband load). When the RF load is determined to be an LMR antenna, then the matching circuitry is tuned for the identified antenna. When the RF load is determined to be wideband equipment, then the matching circuitry remains bypassed.

    摘要: An antenna is provided having a primary helical coil (102) and a secondary helical coil (104) contra-wound relative to the primary helical coil. Switchable coupling between the coils allows the antenna response to switch from lower to higher frequency responses within the same Ultra High Frequency (UHF) band. A bandwidth of the same physical length antenna can be increased up to twice the bandwidth or for a fixed bandwidth, the antenna length can be shortened. For the high frequency band, when the secondary helix is disconnected from the primary helix, the primary coil operates as a interferer notch out to improve interference rejection, to reject unwanted signals from nearby radios transmitting in frequencies separated by duplex spacing, such as Terrestrial Trunked Radio (TETRA) and cellular Global System for Mobile (GSM) communication bands.

    摘要: A short, efficient antenna utilizing a floating coax transmission line over ground or overlapping wire feed structure for reduced antenna size for use in handheld radios. An asymmetric transmission line radiator having a length (LTL) is oriented substantially planar to and proximal to a truncated ground plane, and having at one end an input/output connector, and at an other end a feed point at least one of above a ground plane and proximal to its edge. An exciter antenna in a form of a plate or bent wire is coupled to the feed point and is exterior to the edge of the ground plane and oriented substantially orthogonal to the ground plane, the exciter antenna having a larger dimension length (LEA) that is at least 50% smaller than the length LTL. The overall length of a perimeter of the antenna is approximately ½ a wavelength of a center frequency of the antenna.
