摘要: A user extensible document processing system. The extensible document processing system includes a document processing platform such as a digital copier, control forms for specifying requested services and instructions and one or more document service cards. User provided document processing services are contained on document service cards. A set of basic document processing services are provided by the document processing platform. The document processing platform includes one or more ports for coupling to document service cards, a registration device for registering services into a service taxonomy, a deregistration device for deregistering services from the service taxonomy, a service dispatcher for identifying the service to process a control form using the service taxonomy, and a scanner for creating a digital representation of a paper based document. The document processing platform registers document services upon detecting the coupling of a document services card.

摘要: A user interface method and system for performing sensemaking tasks using visual information objects. The present invention provides techniques for the system to perform operations for creating, rearranging visual information objects, reallocating display space and scaling user input automatically so that users need not interrupt their creative activities. Such operations are intuitive and non-intrusive. Certain of the behavior results of the operations are specified in contracts associated with each visual information object.

摘要: Techniques for displaying contextual information in clipped views of two-dimensional workspaces are provided. A method for indicating an object includes: providing a workspace having a viewed space and a populated space, the viewed space being delineated by a border; determining an object in the populated space; determining a direction of the object from the viewed space; and indicating the object with an indicator on the border of the viewed space in the direction of the object. The distance of the object may determine the appearance of the indicator. The indicator may also show a user's interest. An object indicating system includes: an object determination circuit that determines an object in a populated space and a direction of the object from a viewed space; and an indicator mapping block that indicates the object with an indicator on a border of the viewed space in the direction of the object.

摘要: A user interface method and system for positioning graphical objects in the display area of a free form system. A selected object may operate in a first state where it can be moved to different positions within the display area. The selected object may further operate in a second state where movement of the selected object causes other graphical objects within its path of movement to also move. The state of the selected object is indicated by a visually distinct presentation of the graphical object, for example when in the first state the graphical object is shown to have shadow to provide the visual clue that it is “above” the other graphical objects in the display area. A user may dynamically switch between states based on signals provided to the system.

摘要: A system for controlling use and distribution of digital works. In the present invention, the owner of a digital work attaches usage rights to that work. Usage rights are granted by the "owner" of a digital work to "buyers" of the digital work. The usage rights define how a digital work may be used and further distributed by the buyer. Each right has associated with it certain optional specifications which outline the conditions and fees upon which the right may be exercised. Digital works are stored in a repository. A repository will process each request to access a digital work by examining the corresponding usage rights. Digital work playback devices, coupled to the repository containing the work, are used to play, display or print the work. Access to digital works for the purposes of transporting between repositories (e.g. copying, borrowing or transfer) is carried out using a digital work transport protocol. Access to digital works for the purposes of replay by a digital work playback device (e.g. printing, displaying or executing) is carried out using a digital work playback protocol.

摘要: An interactive display is disclosed which comprises a housing to receive an induced field activated display sheet which has a plurality of image producing elements responsive to an induced field. The housing has a transparent cover panel and a base panel. The cover panel and the base panel of the display housing comprise a plurality of means for creating a plurality of induced fields for selectively activating the image producing elements of the induced field activated display sheet. By selectively activating the induced field means, selective image producing elements of the induced field activated display sheet will be activated to produce a desired image on the induced field activated display sheet thereby creating a display. If desired the induced field activated display sheet can be removed from the display housing to be used as a printed document.

摘要: In a collaborative system in which a body of shared data may be accessed by more than one user, a small-scale representation of the body of shared data displayed to one user includes an indication of the activities of other users. A user that is not viewing the shared data at full scale can thus obtain information about the activities of other users from a small-scale representation. The small-scale representation can indicate the type of activity, the extent or rate of changes in the shared data, the other users viewing the full-scale representation, or can show the shared data in shrunken form, indicating the parts that have been changed. The extent or rate of changes can be indicated with a quantitative indicator such as a gauge.

摘要: Techniques are described that provide a reading pane for reading one or more content portions of a work and a guide pane that displays a structured overview of additional information from the corpus that is focused by an analysis of information from the currently-visible content portion of the work. The contents of the currently-visible content portion displayed within the reading page are used to derive dynamic representations of the user's immediate interests. At the user's request, a structured persistent context-aware guide is computed and displayed. The persistent context-aware guide provides a framework for accessing other parts of the corpus having the most-related information. The elements in the persistent context-aware guide are other content portions or other organizations such as sections, chapters, or articles in the corpus. The persistent context-aware guide may also incorporate additional closely-related information elements from outside the corpus including advertisements. Advertisements for information on the topics of immediate interest to the user can be incorporated within the structured, context-aware guide so that the reader can purchase them and review that information in the context of the current session. The guide pane and the reading pane support navigation controls so that the user can go to new or previous sub-portions of the content portion, new or previous content portions and/or new or previous persistent context-aware guides.
