Apparatus and methods are provided for interacting light with particles, including but not limited to biological matter such as cells, in unique and highly useful ways. Optophoresis consists of subjecting particles to various optical forces, especially optical gradient forces, and more particularly moving optical gradient forces, so as to obtain useful results. In biology, this technology represents a practical approach to probing the inner workings of a living cell, preferably without any dyes, labels or other markers. In one aspect, a particle may be characterized by determining its optophoretic constant or signature. For example, a diseased cell has a different optophoretic constant from a healthy cell, thereby providing information, or the basis for sorting. In the event of physical sorting, various forces may be used for separation, including fluidic forces, such as through the use of laminar flow, or optical forces, or mechanical forces, such as through adhesion. Various techniques for measuring the dielectric constant of particles are provided.

Systems and methods for facilitating gaze tracking based on multiple images are disclosed. A gaze tracking system includes an optical module configured to receive illumination from a target and provide a background and tracking channel outputs, the background channel including ambient illumination and the tracking channel including ambient and controlled added illumination at a targeted range of wavelengths. The background and tracking channel outputs are provided to an imaging module configured to provide an associated set of background and tracking images to a processor module to facilitate gaze tracking. Controlled illumination of the target may be provided by an illumination element, in conjunction with the processor module, to facilitate gaze tracking.

Apparatus and methods for enhancing the performance of an imager in applications such as gaze tracking are described. An enhanced image sensor includes a sensor pixel array, a filter array optically coupled to the pixel array and a filter map including data associated with one or more characteristics of the filter array. The filter array characteristics can be preconfigured and/or dynamically reconfigured to allow for wavelength specific pixel capture, with the filter map correspondingly adjusted in response to changes in the filter array characteristics.
