A method and system of communicating between a base station and a mobile station is disclosed. The base station may be the core of a cell site, which is defined by radio frequency radiation patterns. The cell site may be divided into a number of sectors, each defined respectively by radiation patterns. The mobile station, while within any of the sectors of the cell site, may communicate with the base station on a reverse link by encoding signals using a spreading sequence offset by a common time delay. On the forward link, each sector is assigned a respective time delay that is within the common time delay. While within a respective sector of the cell site, the mobile station may receive signals from the base station on the forward link that have been encoded with the spreading sequence offset by the sector's respective time delay.

A method and system are disclosed for bypassing a cellular wireless communications system by using a peer-to-peer wireless link for voice communications between BLUETOOTH enabled handsets. In an exemplary embodiment, when a ten-digit telephone number is dialed to place a call from a cellular wireless telephone, the cellular wireless telephone determines whether a termination-point, such as a second cellular wireless telephone, associated with the ten-digit telephone number is within range of the peer-to-peer wireless link. If the termination-point is within range, then a direct intercom session may be established over the peer-to-peer wireless link. Otherwise, a call initiation is requested over the cellular wireless communications system.

A method and system for diversity transmission from a mobile station. Signals sent from a mobile station to a base station may suffer from fading. To combat this, diversity transmission is used to compensate for the effects of fading and destructive multi-path interference by sending two or more signals. Signals to be transmitted from the mobile station are split into a first split signal and a second split signal and diversified from one another. Diversification of the split signals may be accomplished by modifying the phase of either the first split signal, the second split signal or both the first and second split signal. The diversified signals may then be transmitted from a first and second antenna.

The DAS may be of the type that includes a plurality of antennas located within a multi-floor building, each antenna radiating to define a respective coverage area in which the mobile station can communicate. The antennas are communicatively linked with a controller, and the controller communicates over an air interface with a radio access network so as to provide connectivity between the antennas and the radio access network. In operation, the system may determine that a given one of the antennas has received a strongest signal from the mobile station, and may transmit an indication of the geographic coverage area of the given antenna into the radio access network, as a representation of the location of the mobile station.

The diversity receive circuit provides an output signal based on a combination of the receive signals. The fractal antennas and the diversity receive circuit can help compensate for, or reduce the effects of fading. Additionally, a transmitter provides a transmit signal. One of the fractal antennas may both transmit and receive signals. Alternatively, a transmit antenna, separate from the receive antennas, may transmit the transmit signals. The fractal antennas may also be fractal arrays for providing additional resistance to fading.
