The worm gear (15, 16) drives clutch hubs (22 and 23) in the opposite rotational directions. The auxiliary power can be transferred to a driven shaft (3) via a common clamping sleeve (27) that can be expanded polygonally by two rows of clamping bodies (28 and 30) into one or the other clutch hubs (22 or 23). The clamping sleeve (27) is slitted into functional segments (A and B). Depending on the direction of rotation of the steering spindle (1), one or the other functional segments (A or B) of the clamping sleeve (27) is always active. The clutch units (2) run in a lubricant so that there is little wear and tear. This steering system can be made at reasonable cost and takes little space for installation.

In order to create a ball bearing helical gearing whose ball bearing guidance enables a uniform, low-noise operation of the ball bearing helical gearing, particularly when the threaded spindle is acted upon by lateral forces, it is provided that the nut comprising the ball bearing routing parts is, in its transition area into the ball bearing raceways, designed in such a manner that a fork structure of a gothic raceway profile of the ball bearing raceways is formed in this area at the height of a contact or pressure angle, and a contact surface of the ball bearing raceways of the threaded spindle with regard to the ball bearings that changes in an almost continuously progressive manner is ensured for a defined jolt-free entering and exiting of the ball bearings into and out of a load entry and load exit zone. A support bushing is provided between an axial end of the steering rod and the recirculating ball nut, the bushing providing a through-hole for guiding the steering rod through. The inner face of the support bushing which faces the steering rod has a curved contour so that the opening cross-section of the through-hole increases toward the end of the steering rod. The curved contour is adapted to a bending line of the steering rod so that the steering rod, when it comes in contact with the support bushing as a result of a bending load, abuts the curved contour thereof in a planar manner.

The invention relates to a steering system, in particular for a motor vehicle, comprising an electric motor (10) for boosting the steering effort and a steering column (11). In the steering effort boosting system known from the state of the art the electric motor together with a transmission transmits a torque to the steering column, the electric motor being arranged perpendicularly to the steering column. This arrangement has a relatively large space requirement. It is the object of the invention to save installation space in future. For this reason, according to the invention, the steering column (11) and the electric motor (10) are arranged parallel to or coaxial with one another.
