In one embodiment of the present invention, a disk drive device adjusts the clearance between a head element portion and a disk with a heater on a slider. The clearance control according to the present embodiment incorporates the variation in heater power efficiency in the clearance variation depending on the radial position. The clearance variation in a unit of heater power varies depending on the radial position. Taking account of the variation in the heater power efficiency in the thermal fly-height control (TFC) depending on the radial position in addition to the clearance variation between the head element portion and the disk caused by variation in fly-height or attitude, accomplishes more accurate TFC.

In one embodiment of the present invention, a disk drive device adjusts the clearance between a head element portion and a disk with a heater on a slider. In an embodiment of the present invention, an HDC/MPU sequentially performs data writing and reading while increasing heater power. The HDC/MPU further determines whether or not a head slider has retrieved the data properly. When the data cannot be retrieved properly, the HDC/MPU specifies a heater power value in a normal operation based on the heater power value at which the data could not be retrieved properly.
