    摘要: A disk drive with a dual-stage actuator has a servo control system with two controllers. One controller is a dual-stage controller that simultaneously generates a primary actuator control signal and a secondary actuator control signal, and uses a degraded-stability primary actuator controller design with high low-frequency open-loop gain and a secondary actuator controller design that provides stability and high mid-frequency to high-frequency open-loop gain resulting in increased bandwidth. The other controller is a single-stage controller that generates only a primary actuator control signal and uses a stable VCM-only controller design. The single-stage controller is selected if failure of the secondary actuator is detected. Failure of the secondary actuator is detected either by providing a model of the dynamic response of the primary and secondary actuators and comparing the modeled head-position with the measured head-position, or by measuring the position of the secondary actuator relative to the primary actuator with a relative-position sensor and comparing the relative position to a modeled position of the secondary actuator.

    摘要: A dual-stage actuator disk drive has calibration tracks located in a nondata band, and uses a secondary-actuator failure detection and calibration test run by the servo control processor. The calibration tracks contain a pattern of pre-written magnetized test blocks. The test is run with the primary actuator biased against a crash stop, which enables the read head to access the calibration tracks. The servo control processor generates a test signal to the secondary actuator and receives a calibration signal from the read head as the read head detects the test blocks in the calibration tracks. The test comprises two measurements: a measurement of the secondary actuator static characteristics, and a measurement of the secondary actuator dynamic characteristics.

    摘要: A method for secondary-actuator failure-detection and recovery in a dual-stage actuator disk drive includes running a calibration test by the servo control processor and measuring the position of the secondary actuator relative to its neutral position in response to the calibration test. The secondary-actuator failure detection and calibration test can be performed on a regular schedule or at selected times, such as at disk drive start-up. With the primary actuator biased at a test location, such as a crash stop or a load/unload ramp, the servo control processor generates a test signal to the secondary actuator and receives a relative-position signal (RPS) from the relative-position sensor in response to the test signal. The test comprises two measurements: a measurement of the secondary actuator static characteristics, and a measurement of the secondary actuator dynamic characteristics.

    摘要: A data recording disk drive has one or more capacitive sensors for sensing out-of-plane vibration of the disk or disks. The sensors are attached to a support structure that is attached to the disk drive housing. Each sensor is associated with a disk and faces a surface of the disk near the outer perimeter of the disk and close to the recording head. The support structure can be made of a metal or a high-strength plastic and can be a separate structure mounted to the housing, or integrated as part of the single-piece housing casting. If it is metallic, as would be the case if it were integrated with the housing, then layers of insulating material separate the sensors from the support structure. A support structure that serves other functions in the disk drive, such as a support for air dams that extend between the disks, can also function as the support structure for the capacitive sensors.

    摘要: A magnetic recording disk drive has a disturbance sensor and a disturbance frequency identifier that are used to adjust the frequency of a peak filter as the disturbance frequency changes. The sensor and the frequency identifier are separate from the servo control loop and thus do not rely on the head position error signal (PES) to predict the disturbance frequency. The adjustable peak filter is coupled in parallel with the servo feedback controller. The peak filter modifies the open loop transfer function and the error rejection function of the servo control loop to provide a higher rejection at the identified frequency. The peak filter may be switched out of or uncoupled from the servo feedback controller during track-seeking or as desired, depending on the amplitude of the sensor signal or the amplitude of the PES.
