Abstract: In one embodiment, a battery monitoring unit for monitoring a battery pack may include a first power MOSFET transistor with at least three pads, and a printed-circuit board with at least three copper layers. The first copper layer may have vias that connect electrical components amounted on the printed-circuit board. The second copper layer may have a first area where copper material is excluded. The first power MOSFET transistor is embedded (1) in the first area of the second copper layer where the copper material is excluded, and (2) between the first copper layer and the third copper layer. The two pads of the power MOSFET may be plated with copper. The first power MOSFET transistor may be connected to the one or more first electrical components through the at least three pads plated with copper.

Abstract: A non-cuboidal battery having a cross-sectional area and a thickness may include a metal can housing, a metal lid coupled to the metal can housing, and an electrode stack disposed in the metal can housing. The thickness of the non-cuboidal battery can be substantially uniform over the cross-sectional area. The electrode stack may include a cathode layer stacked on an anode layer, and a separator layer disposed between the cathode layer and the anode layer. The electrode stack may be hermetically sealed by the metal can housing and the metal lid. A negative terminal that can be electrically coupled to the anode layer and a positive terminal that can be electrically coupled to the cathode layer may be disposed on an exterior side of the metal can housing or the metal lid.

Abstract: Can battery cells are described. The can battery cell includes a battery cell core that is housed in a rigid enclosure. The enclosure can be made of metal or other rigid material. A front face of the enclosure includes an anode tab and a cathode tab extending from the front face. A circuit module is electrically coupled to the anode tab and the cathode tab, and overlies at least a portion of the front face of the enclosure. One of the anode tab or the cathode tab is electrically coupled to the battery enclosure. The other of the anode tab or the cathode tab is electrically insulated from the enclosure. The front face includes a protrusion portion that forms a step-like structure in the front face of the enclosure.

Abstract: For electronic devices that have an electrically conductive surface across a gap from a battery enclosure, the described circuit may be used to detect an anomalous event. The circuit may connect the battery enclosure to ground and may include a switch that operably connects the electrically conductive surface to ground or, upon actuation of the switch, to a portion of the circuit including a resistor. In an anomaly detection mode, the switch is controlled to disconnect the surface from ground and to connect the surface to a resistance measurement channel and a resistor that is connected to the sub-circuit and ground. The system may determine an impedance across the resistor and may use the measured impedance to detect and/or classify an anomalous event.
