    Abstract: A polarizing illuminator includes a light source, a collimator for collimating a light beam emitted by the light source, a parallel plate having a first surface and a second surface disposed at an acute angle with respect to the light beam, the first surface including a transmissive portion and a reflective portion, and the second surface including a reflective polarizer configured to reflect one polarization of the light beam, transmit an orthogonal polarization of the light beam, and split the light beam into first and second orthogonally polarized sub-beams, and a retarding wave plate disposed between the reflective portion of the first surface and the reflective polarizer, wherein the retarding wave plate is configured to rotate at least one of the first sub-beam and the second sub-beam to a matched polarization, and the first and second sub-beams having the matched polarization propagate parallel to each other.

    Abstract: A polarizing illuminator with light recycling includes a light source and a reflector disposed proximate one another. An assembly including a lens, a quarter-wave plate, and a reflective polarizer is configured to redirect the light at unwanted polarization back to the specific location of the reflector, which reflects the light back through the quarter-wave plate, enabling the light to be recycled. The lens collimates both the transmitted and the recycled light portions, providing well-defined light beams. The configuration allows the recycled light beam to be collimated and to propagate in a pre-determined direction, allowing targeted focusing of the recycled light onto pixels of a spatial light modulator.
