摘要： In accordance with the present disclosure, an expandable diameter stylus and related systems and methods are described herein. The expandable diameter stylus may comprise an elongated body and a writing surface disposed on an end of the elongated body. The expandable diameter stylus may also include a variable diameter grip proximate to the writing surface. In certain embodiments the variable diameter grip may have a first diameter when the expandable diameter stylus is positioned within a stylus garage of a portable computing system. The variable diameter grip may have a second diameter, larger than the first diameter, when the stylus is removed from the stylus garage for use as an input device.

摘要： A torsion system for a portable computer including a base and cover pivotally connected to the base for movement between a closed position and an open position. The cover has a free end and a pivotally connected end. A pair of spaced apart hinge components are mounted on the pivotally connected end of the cover between a first side and a second side of the cover. A first frame portion is mounted in the first side of the cover and a second frame portion is mounted in the second side of the cover. A torsion member interconnects the pair of hinge components and the first and second frame portions. The torsion member has a closed cross-section.

摘要： A self-contained flowable thermal interface material module includes a carrier having opposite sides and a continuous peripheral edge. A thermal interface material is mounted on the carrier. A portion of the interface material is exposed on each of the opposite sides. A continuous gasket is mounted on the carrier and is also exposed on each of the opposite sides. The gasket is positioned between the interface material and the peripheral edge. The module may be positioned between a heat generating component and a heat sink so that a portion of the gasket seals with the heat generating component, and a portion of the gasket seals with the heat sink to form a reservoir for retaining the heated flowable interface material. In this manner, the gasket contains a reservoir of the thermal interface material in contact with the heat generating component and with the heat sink throughout continuous periods of thermal cycling.

A heat sink, also referred to as a remote heat exchanger, is positioned in the base adjacent to the heat producing component. A heat pipe has a first end permanently bonded to the heat sink and extends to a second end thermally engaged with the heat producing component. The heat sink and heat pipe assembly is rotatable about an axis of the heat sink so as to move the second end of the heat pipe into and out of thermal engagement with the heat producing component.

摘要： A portable computer including two plastic enclosures has a first hinge body attached to a first one of the enclosures. The first hinge body includes a bore formed therein. A flowable lubricant such as grease is disposed within the bore. A second hinge body is attached to a second one of the enclosures. The second hinge body includes an elongated shaft pivotally mounted within the bore having grooves formed on an outer surface of the shaft. A sealing member such as an O-ring is resiliently compressed between one of the grooves and an inner surface of the bore. A friction member is seated in another one of the grooves and in contact with the inner surface of the bore. The seal member has a coefficient of friction such that friction between the seal member and the bore is negligible with respect to friction between the friction member and the bore. The seal member limits the escape of lubricant and the resulting lubricant-induced stress cracks.

摘要： An apparatus and method is provided for installing and connecting one or more expansion boards in a computer system while the computer system is being manufactured as well as when a user upgrades or reconfigures the computer system. An expansion board bay for receiving the expansion board is located within the computer system, typically on a circuit board such as the motherboard. A connector module that is separate from the expansion board and the expansion board bay is positioned within the computer system. The connector module is positioned to provide easy external access to a contact portion of the connector module, thereby allowing a user to connect an external data signal line to the connector module. A connector cable operably connects the expansion board with the connector module to establish communication between the data processor and the external data line through the expansion board.

The computer system includes a microprocessor, a system memory coupled to the microprocessor, a bus coupled to the microprocessor, an input device coupled to the bus, and a voltage adapter system for providing a DC voltage to the computer system. The voltage adapter system includes a voltage modifying device adapted for converting an AC voltage to a DC voltage. A first cable assembly is electrically connected to supply the AC voltage from an AC power supply to the voltage modifying device. A second cable assembly is provided for selectively supplying the DC voltage to the system from the voltage modifying device or from a remote DC voltage power supply. The second cable assembly is connectable at a first end to the system and connectable at a second end to the voltage modifying device and to the remote DC voltage power supply.

摘要： A portable computer system includes an illuminated keyboard. The computer system has an enclosure including a base and a cover pivotally attached to the base. The keyboard subassembly is mounted in the base. The keyboard subassembly includes a plurality of key mechanisms mounted on a first side thereof. A light panel having a plurality of openings formed therethrough in a pattern generally corresponding to the plurality of key mechanisms is provided. The light panel is mounted adjacent the first side of the keyboard subassembly with each one of the key mechanisms extending through a respective opening in the light panel. A key cap is mounted on each one of the key mechanisms. In one embodiment, each key cap includes a body formed of a non-opaque material having an opaque character indicia portion formed thereon. Light is transmitted through body such that the character indicia portion may be viewed in low light conditions. The key cap may include a light diffuser to enhance the projection of light from the light panel to the character indicia portion.
