An introducer is structured with an elongated tube having first and second lumens. A molded handle is coupled to the proximal end of the tube with an opening aligned with the first lumen. Further, a wall adjacent the opening of the handle defines a slot and is located diametrically opposite the second lumen. A tubular reinforcement member is located within the second lumen and the handle is provided with a second opening, thereby having a communication with the second lumen. In another embodiment a lead/catheter introducer includes an implantable lead or catheter having an elongated first lumen through which the lead or catheter passes and a second lumen extends parallel to the first lumen along at least a distal portion thereof. A tubular reinforcement member is disposed within the second lumen. The tubular reinforcement member further includes an internal lumen and a curvable stylet disposed in the lumen.

An introducer or guide catheter for directing an implantable medical device such as a lead or catheter to a desired location within a patient's body. In one embodiment of the invention, the introducer comprises a two-lumen tube. A first lumen is configured to receive the implantable medical device that is to be introduced. A second lumen is provided to receive an insertable, elongated guiding member such as a stylet, which may be shapable in various orientations, and which may be used to alter the configuration of the introducer. The second lumen may be provided with an internal coil or other tubular reinforcement member to prevent perforation of this lumen by the guiding member when the introducer is in the patient's body. In order to facilitate removal of the introducer over an implantable medical device having a connector or fitting that is larger than the internal diameter of the first lumen, the introducer may be adapted to be slit or split along its length. In some embodiments of the invention, the introducer may be rendered splittable by provision of a weakened zone along its length. According to yet another aspect of the invention, the introducer may be provided with a luer lock at its proximal end to facilitate connection of the introducer to a hemostasis valve, t-fitting, or the like.

The leads are constructed so that upon tension applied to the electrode, it is withdrawn to a first location, so that upon further application of tension, the sheath located distal to the withdrawn electrode may collapse, enhancing its removability. Pusher means formed of an elongated pusher body of flexible material extends between a pusher body proximal end and a pusher body distal end and has a cardiac lead engaging means for engaging the cardiac lead at or adjacent the distal lead end. The pusher body has sufficient column strength to be advanced alongside the guide body and lead body with the cardiac lead engaging means engaging and slidingly advancing the guide body tracking means and the cardiac lead distally along the guide body to thereby allow the cardiac lead to be advanced along the guide body until the electrode is positioned at the cardiac implantation site. The lead body is released from the lead engaging means and fixed, if the lead includes a fixation mechanism. The pusher means is retracted by retraction of the pusher body.

A cardioversion/defibrillation lead, and method of manufacture thereof, for location in a human heart. An elongated lead body having an insulating outer sheath extends between proximal and distal ends thereof, and an elongated defibrillation conductor within the lead body extends from a connector at the proximal end to a distal end at a predetermined location along the lead body length. A spiral band defibrillation electrode extends in spiral turns around the exterior of the insulating outer sheath for a pre-determined defibrillation electrode length. The defibrillation electrode is fabricated of a single tube of body compatible, electrically conductive material having first and second tube ends and an inside diameter selected to fit over the outer sheath and the internally disposed defibrillation lead conductor. At least one (and preferably a plurality) spiral slit is formed therein extending from first and second slit end points, spaced from the first and second ends, respectively, thereby forming at least one spiral band integrally attached to first and second end bands, respectively. At least one of the first and second end bands is attached to the defibrillation lead conductor at or near the distal end thereof. In other embodiments, intermediate connection bands are formed along the length of the spiral band, and electrical connections are made between such intermediate connection bands and the defibrillation lead conductor.
