Abstract: A peristaltic pump comprises a rotatable drum 2 having rollers 5 or cams 5' for squashing a flexible tube 9 against a profiled surface 10 of a presser plate 7. Tube 9 is mounted between supports 14 and 15 on presser plate 7 and is automatically movable between an inoperative and operative (pumping) position by pivotal movement of plate 7 about axis 8 produced by an electro mechanical actuator. A flexible membrane 33 is sandwiched between rollers 5 or cams 5' for eliminating shear forces on the tube 9. The construction of the pump and shape of profile 10 are such as to mimimise pulsations in the output flow. Systems for supplying a sample for analysis to spectroscopic apparatus using the peristaltic pump are also described.

Abstract: A spectroscopy system for spectro-chemical analysis of a sample includes a plasma torch (50) for generating a microwave induced plasma (90) as a spectroscopic source. The plasma forming gas is nitrogen which can contain an oxygen impurity. Thus the system includes a nitrogen generator (70) which is preferably supplied with compressed atmospheric air from a compressor (75) for oxygen to be removed from the air by adsorption. The invention allows the use of an on-site nitrogen gas generator and thus gives cost savings because the need to obtain supplies of bottled high purity gas is eliminated.

Abstract: Spectroscopic apparatus for sequentially detecting the presence of a plurality of elements in a sample. The apparatus includes a plurality of lamps (1a-1e) each of which is for detecting the presence of a respective at least one predetermined element in a plurality of elements. A beam selector (13) which may be a mirror, is operative to direct a beam of light (7) from any one of lamps (1a-1e) to an analysis zone (8). The apparatus includes a monochromator (15), the drive (24) of which is under the control of a controller (25) with a memory device (26) linked thereto. Predetermined settings for the monochromator corresponding to the peak settings for each wavelength of interest can be stored in memory (26) for subsequently driving the monochromator to those settings without the need to undertake a peaking routine for each elemental analysis, thereby saving analyses time. The lamp and beam selector arrangement of the apparatus substantially reduces the time required to change from one lamp to another thereby facilitating sequential spectroscopic multi-element analyses of samples. Apparatus which uses a flame for atomising a sample includes valves (19 and 20) for controlling the flow of oxidant (17) and fuel (18) gases to a spray chamber (23) and then analysis zone (8), the oxidant (17) being supplied via a nebuliser (22). The valves (19 and 20) are preferably high speed oscillating valves having an adjustable on to off time ration under the control of a microprocessor (21). The oscillating valves (19 and 20) allow rapid changes to be made to the oxidant and fuel gas flows, thereby also saving analysis time.

Abstract: An ultraviolet/visible/infrared spectrophotometer, with a pulsed light source (10), has a monochromator with variable slit width to provide variable spectral resolution. The dynamic range at the detectors (24, 28) is reduced by varying the pulse energy emitted by the light source (10) in accordance with the wavelength and slit width settings (34, 36), and/or by varying the slit height in accordance with the slit width. The ligth source (10) may be a xenon flash lamp.

Abstract: A spectrophotometer including a light source (1) operative to emit a beam of light (15), an optical system for directing the light beam (15) to a sample (8) to be analyzed, and a detector (9) which detects the intensity of the light beam after the beam interacts with the sample (8). The light source (1) is operative to emit bursts of light separated by an interval during which no light is emitted. By way of example, a xenon tube may be used for that purpose. The spectrophotometer measures the intensity of the light beam generated by each burst of light after that beam interacts with the sample. Each such light beam may be divided into first and second parts (5 and 4) prior to interaction with the sample (8), and the optical system is arranged to direct the first part (5) to the sample (8) and to direct the second part (4) to a second detector (7) for conducting a reference measurement. A dark signal measurement may be conducted immediately before or after each burst of light.
