A light source is disposed within the pointer base and a slit is provided in the body. The inner surface of the pointer body is reflective such that light directed from the light source is reflected off of the reflective surface and through the slit. In another embodiment the light source is disposed externally of the pointer and a reflecting member is provided in the pointer for reflecting the light towards the distal end of the conical body. The reflecting member can include a reflecting mirror or, alternatively, a prism.

The second image is reflected by the first image emitting unit substantially in the same direction as the first image is emitted from the first image emitting unit. A reflection member reflects the first and second images in a predetermined direction, for example, towards a viewpoint of driver in case of application for automobiles. The reflected images may be observed as a superimposed virtual image. The superimposed virtual image is easy for an observer to focus thereon, resulting in high visibility of displayed image.

An indication display unit for vehicles of this invention is provided with a head-up display (HUD), an indication projector, a display device located at the ceiling of the vehicle, and a reflector forwardly located relative to a driver's seat. The indication display unit of this invention further includes a shifting mechanism for the reflector so that when the vehicle speed decreases lower than a predetermined low speed limit, the reflector can be completely shifted away from the driver's visual field. The shifting of the reflector can be accomplished by having the reflector shift in a vertical direction or just outside, but near the driver's visual field, in a horizontal direction.

The object of the present invention is to eliminate a double image of a display apparatus for automobiles in which an image of displayer is reflected by a transparent reflection plate toward a driver's seat so that the display image for displaying information on the condition of the vehicle such as vehicle speed can be seen as a virtual image. A display apparatus for automobiles according to the present invention comprising: a displayer for emitting display light; a reflection plate having a first surface on a driver's seat side and a second surface on a side opposite to the driver's seat, the display light diagonally falling on the first surface and being reflected on the first surface to be directed to an eye range, a display image of the displayer being recognized from the driver's seat side within a display range on the first surface, at least a portion of the second surface corresponding to the display range of the first surface being diagonally disposed in relation to the first surface.
