Abstract: Disclosed are systems, methods, and structures that increase overall sensing reach of a DFOS system and reduces system cost without sacrificing sensed signal quality by employing a cascaded arrangement of DFOS interrogators and operating method providing backscattering DFOS, maintaining each span within a desired length which can advantageously be determined by signal quality, pulse rate, or other factors such as physical layout. The cascaded DFOS interrogators work independently while sharing the pulse light produced by the first interrogator in a cascaded series of interrogators. The light is amplified in successive fiber spans and a circulator may be employed to cut-off any backscattered signal.

Abstract: Aspects of the present disclosure describe DFOS/DAS systems, methods, and structures that employ active microphones to enhance DAS operational capabilities by using an active circuit to amplify acoustic signals including voice(s). The circuit includes a microphone to collect acoustic signal(s) resulting from voice signals in the environment, and a speaker or a vibration device driven by an amplifier. The circuit can be clipped onto the fiber, with direct contact through the speaker or vibration device. A microcontroller may advantageously be employed to control the circuit for reduced power consumption, by detecting activities locally and only enabling the speaker when needed. The microcontroller may also send other information such as battery status to the DFOS interrogator through vibration codes.

Abstract: A method and system are described for providing hitless protection in a packet switched network having source nodes and destination nodes. The method includes enabling a working path and a protecting path between the source and destination nodes. The working path is non-overlapping with respect to the protecting path. The method further includes replicating traffic in a given one of the source nodes to generate replicated traffic. The method also includes forwarding the traffic and the replicated traffic through a working path and a protecting path, respectively, from the given one of the source nodes to a particular one of the destination nodes. The method additionally includes delivering a hitless-protected service in the particular one of the destination nodes by selecting traffic packets received from either the working path or the protecting path.

Abstract: A distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) system that collects many frequency bands within the system (in particular, analog to digital converter, or ADC) bandwidth. The bands are divided into multiple groups, and within each group, the inter-band interference from band i to band j is at least l1 dB lower than the power of band j. For different groups, the inter-band interference is at least l2 dB lower than the power of band j, that l2≥l1+Cl, where Cl is a value related to round-trip fiber loss. The bands belonging to the same group are cascaded one after another, with little guard time in between, or packed back-to-back. This arrangement advantageously increases the overall signal power, resulting in an improved SNR.

Abstract: Aspects of the present disclosure describe systems methods and structures for avoiding saturation caused phase jump in systems that extract information from the phase of a complex sequence and exhibit an overflow or “spike” in the output of a high-pass filter. Operationally, during phase unwrapping—when an output signal exceeds a supported range—it is adjusted to be back in range by adding N·2π, to a phase where N is negative or positive integer, depending on the direction to be adjusted.

Abstract: Aspects of the present disclosure describe apparatus, methods and systems for monitoring the operational status of fire extinguishers through the utilization of optically sensed, color profile determinations of a pressure gauge positioned on the fire extinguisher as well as the utilization of vibrational, and location sensing devices. Advantageously, monitoring apparatus according to the present disclosure are networkable, and a number of their operational characteristics may be configured via the network and associated servers. Furthermore, monitoring apparatus according to the present disclosure may employ vibrational, acceleration, GPS, RFID, and ultrasonic sensors to detect movement, location, and obstructions. In sharp contrast to the prior art, apparatus, methods and systems according to the present disclosure operate with existing fire extinguishers and provide a convenient, cost effective, and highly functional upgrade path for deployed fire extinguishers.

Abstract: Disclosed are vehicle-infrastructure interaction systems and methods employing a distributed fiber optic sensing (DFOS) system operating with pre-deployed fiber-optic telecommunication cables buried alongside/proximate to highways/roadways which provide 24/7 continuous information stream of vehicle traffic at multiple sites; only require a single optical sensor cable that senses/monitors multiple locations of interest and multiple lanes of traffic; the single optical sensor cable measures multiple related information (multi-parameters) about a vehicle, including driving speed, wheelbase, number of axles, tire pressure, and others, that can be used to derive secondary information such as weight-in-motion; and overall information about a fleet of vehicles, such as traffic congestion or traffic-cargo volume. Different from merely traffic counts, our approach can provide the count grouped by vehicle-types and cargo weights. Precise measurements are facilitated by high temporal sampling rates of the distributed acoustic sensing and a dedicated peak finding algorithm for extracting the timing information reliably.

Abstract: A fast optical fiber identification system and method employing an acoustic pen that is connected to a portable device (such as a laptop, a smartphone, an iPad). The pen generates acoustic signals under the control of the portable device. The portable device interacts with a DFOS (Distributed Fiber Optic Sensor, e.g., a DAS or DVS) interrogator to notify the interrogator about the generated signals and receives a detection result from the interrogator. The result is either illustrated using a graph on the portable device, or as a tone of different volume, to indicate the strength of the pen's signal detected by the interrogator. As the pen touches/excites vibrationally/acoustically each of the fibers, the portable device notifies the user about the detected signal's strength or presence/no-presence, which allows a technician to quickly identify the fiber of interest.
