    Abstract: An exemplary gas cell is adapted to provide wavelength stability to a coherent beam of light. An optic fiber is wound in a plurality winding turns where the optic fiber transports the coherent beam of light from an input fiber end to an output fiber end. An encapsulating material engages and holds the windings in a fixed structure. A plurality of slots define severed portions of the optic fiber windings generally transverse to the windings and portions of the encapsulating material so that the optic fiber is divided into a plurality of end to end segments with open space filling the slots between respective facing ends of the severed optic fibers. A wavelength reference gas is disposed within the open space of the slots so that the beam of light passes from the input fiber end through respective facing ends of the optic fiber segments and wavelength reference gas in the corresponding slots to traverse a path through the plurality of winding turns to the output fiber end.

    Abstract: A dissipative insert provided within an electrical connector having multiple connector pins and an outer conductive housing where the insert is configured around the pins within the housing and provides structural integrity thereto and prevents a short circuit between the pins and between the pins and the housing. The insert is comprised of a mixture of a polymer and a conductive material that causes the insert to have a volume resistivity in the range of 1×106-1×1010 ohm-cm. In one embodiment, the conductive material is carbon nanotubes.

    Abstract: An optical amplifier is provided in which radiation levels experienced by an optical fiber are minimized. A sealed enclosure houses an optical fiber. An input optical signal enters on end of the fiber and an amplified output optical signal exits the other end of the optical fiber. Small particles embedded with a gas fill the interior of the enclosure. An optical pump supplies an amplification laser beam coupled to one of the ends of the optical fiber. Due to energy supplied by the amplification laser beam, the input optical signal is amplified upon exiting the optical fiber. At least a portion of the gas embedded in the small particles is released inside the enclosure when the small particles are subjected to heat to provide a gaseous interior in the enclosure that minimizes radiation levels experienced by the optical fiber due to external radiation.

    Abstract: A ball grid array (BGA) connector including an outer housing, an insert mounted within the outer housing having a first side and a second side, and a plurality of electrical contacts provided within the insert. The BGA connector also includes a plurality of connector balls electrically coupled to the electrical contacts at the first side of the insert, where some of the connector balls have a low Young's modulus and some of the connector balls have a high Young's modulus such that the high Young's modulus connector balls carry more of a separation load than the low Young's modulus connector balls. In one embodiment, the high Young's modulus connector balls are located around an outer periphery of the BGA. Also, the high modulus connector balls are soldered to larger solder pads than the low modulus connector balls.

    Abstract: This invention installs multiple miniature strain gauges inside a regular dimensioned bolt washer to accurately measure bolt preload. To enhance the strain gauge sensitivity, an alloy with low elastic modulus and high yield strength is selected to fabricate the metal washer. In addition, multiple gauges are connected in series to multiply the effective gauge length and enhance measurement sensitivity. Further, the stain gauges are encapsulated in the middle of the washer as opposed to on the external surface which offers much improved sensitivity and physical protection of the strain gauges.
