The toner contains an external additive and the electrophotographic photosensitive member has surface properties of universal hardness of 200 N/mm2 or above (provided that a curve that represents the relationship between hardness and depth of indentation by an indenter has no point of inflection) and a coefficient of surface friction of from 0.01 to 1.2.
