An image display system is disclosed which includes an image filing device to pre-store data on the entire area of a large sized image; a CRT unit to partially display this large sized image on its display screen at the same scale; and an image memory to temporarily store a partial image of the large sized image, that will be displayed on this CRT as well as its surrounding image. When display area scrolling is directed by a scroll direction input device, image information which is newly required due to the given scrolling operation is read out under the control of the CPU, and the unnecessary image information is replaced or written over by the new image information, with semi-realtime, in the memory area in which the image information which became useless due to the scrolling operation had been stored in the image memory. Thus, the display image area concerning the scroll and its surrounding image area always prepared in the image memory, thereby allowing for a smooth scrolling operation.

An apparatus for labeling three-dimensionally connected components in a three-dimensional image is provided. The apparatus includes a two-dimensional labeling processor which labels each connected component in two-dimensional images giving a proper component code, and a coordinate calculator which calculates coordinates of a representative point representing each connected component. The apparatus further includes a connectivity detection processor which checks connectivity of representative points in adjacent two-dimensional image planes and an editing processor which modifies the component codes already provided by the two-dimensional labeling processor using the connectivity information to obtain three-dimensionally labeled image codes.

An input apparatus for a computer-aided picture data base management system, which has an image input device that optically reads an original picture image, such as a map having objects drawn by closed loop lines, and produces its digital image. An object image pattern extracting unit executes a digital image processing to extract map objects from the image and produces vector data of a series of coordinate data streams that define the geometric shape of each extracted object. The vector data of the extracted objects are automatically affixed with identification labels. An image presentation device outputs a reference image including the extracted objects affixed with the identification labels and presents it to an operator. When the operator manually prepares a document describing the list of plural sets of attibute data to be input, which are also affixed with identification labels, by referring to the reference image and sets the document to an optical character reader, which produces a character data signal that represents plural sets of attribute data corresponding to the extracted objects. This signal is supplied to an automatic map data generator, which automatically combines plural sets of vector data of the extracted objects with plural sets of attribute data through the identification labels in such a manner that one set of attribute data is merged with vector data having the same identification label as this attribute data.
