In a radiation image read-out method wherein preliminary read-out is conducted prior to final read-out for adjusting final read-out conditions and/or image processing conditions for a radiation image stored on a stimulable phosphor sheet, a histogram of preliminary read-out image signals obtained by the preliminary read-out is created. A characteristic value of the preliminary read-out image signals within a region at least outside of a sharp peak region arising near the maximum signal value and/or the minimum signal value in the histogram is calculated. The final read-out conditions and/or the image processing conditions are adjusted based on the characteristic value.

In the system for providing the above two kinds of output services, the numbers of film scanners, file outputting devices, and digital printers are determined so that the processing performance of each kind of apparatus in a unit time times the number of each kind of apparatus is almost the same, to make each kind of apparatus comprising the system demonstrate its full performance. A medium image obtaining device for obtaining an image file recorded in a medium and a digital camera image obtaining device may further be provided so that the above two outputting services are promptly provided for a picture image such as a processed image recorded in a medium and brought into a service provider by a customer and a picture image recorded by a digital camera, whereby one system can carry out film reading, image obtaining from a medium or a digital camera, picture print generation, and writing a picture image in a recording medium.

When a reprint of a picture which has been printed once and stored as picture image data is requested under a different condition, the reprint can be generated without carrying out rereading of a film. When film reading for generating a print is carried out, as much information showing the content of the picture image is recorded on the film as possible. This includes information which is not necessary for generating the requested print. It is stored as a portion of the picture image data. In this manner, even when a reprint under a condition different from the previous printing is requested, the print can be generated by reading necessary content from the stored picture image data.

When a picture print is generated by editing a picture image recorded on a film, the print in accordance with a customer's requirements is generated by simple operations and at a low cost. Low resolution image data of a picture image read from a film are recorded in a recording medium, in addition to software for image editing, and provided to a customer so that the customer can carry out editing operations on the picture using a personal computer or the like. When a print is ordered, editing instruction information generated by recording the operations the customer has carried out for the editing is received from the customer via the recording medium. Based on the editing instruction information, a scanner reads a film in high resolution and a printer outputs a print after automatic editing on the image data.

In a radiation image recording and reproducing system, final read-out of a radiation image stored in a stimulable phosphor sheet is conducted by exposing the stimulable phosphor sheet to stimulating rays, and photoelectrically detecting light emitted by the stimulable phosphor sheet upon stimulation thereof to obtain a visible image. Prior to the final read-out, preliminary read-out is conducted for detecting the image input information by use of stimulating rays having stimulation energy lower than the stimulation energy of stimulating rays used in the final read-out. By the preliminary read-out, the minimum stimulated emission intensity among all points over the whole surface of the stimulable phosphor sheet and that among all points in one region within the radiation exposure field of the stimulable phosphor sheet at the time of the image recording are measured. A scale factor in the final read-out is adjusted in accordance with the difference between the minimum stimulated emission intensities thus measured.

The emitted light is detected by a photoelectric read-out device, and an image signal representing the radiation image is thereby obtained. Threshold value processing is carried out in accordance with the obtained image signal, and a prospective abnormal pattern is thereby detected from the radiation image. A predetermined threshold value, which is used in the threshold value processing for detecting the prospective abnormal pattern, is set to be a small value as the amount of change in the image signal corresponding to the region in the vicinity of the prospective abnormal pattern becomes large.
