Abstract: A ropeless elevator system includes an elevator car constructed and arranged to move along a hoistway and into a transfer station that is in communication with the hoistway. An electronic controller of the ropeless elevator system is configured to control the speed of the elevator car when at least when the elevator car is in the transfer station. A first detector of the ropeless elevator system is supported by the elevator car and is configured to send a first signal to the electronic controller at least in-part indicative of a presence in the elevator car. If a presence is detected the electronic controller outputs a speed control signal indicative of the presence.

Abstract: A secondary portion of a linear electromagnetic propulsion system is configured to propel an elevator car disposed in a hoistway that is defined by a stationary structure. The secondary portion includes a first permanent magnet assembly extending longitudinally along the hoistway. A plurality of support structures of the secondary portion are engaged to and extend between the elevator car and the first permanent magnet assembly. The support structures are further spaced from one-another along the hoistway. A housing extends between and substantially envelopes the plurality of support structures for structural support.

Abstract: A braking system for a hoisted structure guided along a guide rail is provided. The braking system includes a brake member for coupling to the hoisted structure and having a brake surface configured to frictionally engage the guide rail, the brake member moveable between a braking position and a non-braking position. Further included is a brake member actuation mechanism operatively coupled to the brake member and configured to actuate the brake member from the non-braking position to the braking position, the brake member actuation mechanism remaining coupled to the brake member in the braking position to control the braking force applied on the hoisted structure by the frictional engagement between the guide rail and the brake member.

Abstract: A termination device for a suspension member of an elevator system includes a housing, and a wedge assembly positioned in the housing. The wedge assembly is interactive with the suspension member to apply a clamping force to the suspension member in response to an axial load acting on the suspension member. The wedge assembly includes a compressible cushion configured to increase uniformity of the clamping force applied to the suspension member by the wedge assembly. An elevator system includes a hoistway, an elevator car located in the hoistway, a suspension member operably connected to the elevator car to suspend and/or drive the elevator car along the hoistway, and a termination device located in the hoistway and operably connected to a suspension member end of the suspension member.
