Abstract:
Polymeric quaternary ammonium betaines; the preparation thereof; and uses therefor. These are illustrated by polymers and copolymers of dicarboxylic anhydrides such as maleic anhydride and copolymers thereof derived from copolymerizable compounds such as olefins, vinyl compounds, etc.; a carboxylic acid group of the anhydride polymeric unit being esterified with a quaternary alkanolamine. The polymers are prepared by reacting the anhydride-containing polymer with an alkylene oxide and a tertiary amine to form quaternary alkanolamine esters.
Abstract:
LINEAR POLYESTER OF A PHOSPHORUS-CONTAINING ACID AND A DOIL AS ILLUSTRATED BY A POLYESTER HAVING REPETITIVE UNITS OF THE FORMULA:
-X-P(=X)(-Z)-B-
WHERE X IS OXYGEN OR SULFUR; B IS A DIOL RESIDUE; Z IS HYDROGEN IN THE CASE OF A PHOSPHITE ESTER I.E. H; A HYDROCARBON OR A SUBSTITUTED HYDROCARBON GROUP IN THE CASE OF A PHOSPHONATE ESTER E.E. R; AN OXYHYDROCARBON OR A SUBSTITUTED OXYHYDROCARBON GROUP IN THE CASE OF THE THIOPHOSPHAGE ESTER I.E. - SR. THE PREFERRED POLYESTER HAS REPEATING UNITS OF THE FORMULA
-O-P(=O)(-Z)-(O-A)N-
WHERE OA IS THE RESIDUE OF AN ALKYLENE OXIDE OR A SUBSTITUTED ALKYLENE OXIDE; N IS AN INTEGER, FOR EXAMPLE 1-300 OR MORE, SUCH AS ABOUT 2-250, FOR EXAMPLE ABOUT 3-200, BUT ADVANTAGEOUSLY ABOUT 5-130, AND Z IS HYDROGEN, A SUBSTITUTED GROUP (R), FOR EXAMPLE, ALKYL, ARYL, CYCLOALKYL, ALKARYL, ARALKYL, HETEROCYCLIC, INCLUDING SUBSTITUTED DERIVATIVES THEREOF, ETC.; ALKOXY OR ARYLOXY GROUP (OR) FOR EXAMPLE METHOXY, PROPOXY, ISOPROPOXY, 2-ETHYLEHEXOY, ETC., PHENOXY, ETC. THE POLYESTERS ARE EMPLOYED AS DEMULSIFIERS AS WELL AS FOR OTHER USES.
Abstract:
A process of demulsifying water-in-oil emulsions, such as petroleum emulsions, which is characterized by the use of a hydrophobic ultra-high molecular weight polyoxirane; said polyoxirane being prepared by polymerizing an oxirane with a catalyst system comprising: 1. A CATALYST CAPABLE OF PREPARING ULTRA-HIGH MOLECULAR WEIGHT OXIRANE POLYMERS AND 2. A NITRO COMPOUND The catalyst system is exemplified by (1) an organoaluminum compound, such as an aluminum-alkyl, and (2) a nitroaromatic such as nitrobenzene. A chelating agent and water may also be employed in the catalyst system.
