HIGH MOLECULAR WEIGHT POLYETHERS ARE PROVIDED THAT CONTAIN AZIDOMETHYL GROUPS PENDANT FROM THE MAIN POLYMER BACKBONE. THESE POLYMERS ARE CHARACTERIZED BY CONTAINING FROM 0.2 TO 100% OF AZIDOMETHYL ETHYLENE OXIDE REPEATING UNITS. THEY ARE PREPARED BY REACTING A POLYMER OF AN EPIHALOHYDRIN WITH A METAL AZIDE. THE AZIDOMETHYL POLYETHERS CAN BE CROSS-LINKED BY HEATING AT LOW TEMPERATURE (UNDER 100*C.)

A novel catalytic system comprising (a) a divalent alkaline earth metal, (b) anhydrous ammonia and (c) an organic dioxide is used to polymerize ethylene oxide to hard, granulated polymers having a final average molecular weight of from about 1 million to 10 million. The polymers are prepared by contacting the ethylene oxide with a suspension comprising the catalyst system and a nonsolvent for the polymer, thereby forming low-molecular weight polymers which are then built up by the addition thereto of further amounts of the oxide.

A NEW METHOD FOR VULCANIZING EPIHALOHYDRINE ELASTOMERS EMPLOYS, AS ESSENTIAL VULCANIZATION INGREDIENTS, (1) A THIOALKANOIC ACID OR ITS METAL SALTS SUCH AS THIODIPROPIONIC ACIDS, METHYLENE-BIS-THIOPROPIONIC ACID, THIODIACETIC ACID AND MERCAPTOACETIC ACID OR THE CORRESPONDING SODIUM OR LEAD SALTS, AND (2) A TERTIARY AMINE, PARTICULARLY THE COMPOUND 1,4-DIAZA (2.2.2) BICYCLOOCTAE. HEN THE ACID FORM OF INGREDIENT (1) IS EMPLOYED IT IS NECESSARY TO ADD A THIRD COMPONENT WHICH IS A METAL BASE COMPOUND SUCH AS AN ALKALI METAL CARBOXYLATE, LEAD OXIDE, ETC. WHEN A METAL SALT OF A THIOALKANOIC ACID INGREDIENT (1) SUCH AS DISODIUM THIODIPROPIONATE IS EMPLOYED THE THIRD COMPONENT IS UNNECESSARY. THE VULCANIZING SYSTEM POVIDES VERY FAST AND ADJUSTABLE CURE CYCLES PRODUCING VULCANIZATES OF LOW ODOR AND OF EXCELLENT PHYSICAL PROPERTIES.
