In accordance with an example embodiment of the present invention, an apparatus (by example a node with a cognitive control radio CCR) receives first and second messages indicating at least one of a number of nodes per cognitive radio network and amount of traffic per cognitive radio network participating to a respective first and second cognitive control network CCN. The node selects one of the first and second cognitive control network based at least partly on at least one of the number of participating nodes and the amount of traffic per similar cognitive radio network for which the apparatus is capable of accessing. In a specific embodiment, the selection is according to a predefined set of rules, such as select only a channel that appears to be free of primary users; scan a predefmed set of frequency channels in a predefined order; and others. If there are no suitable pre-existing cognitive control networks CCNs available, there are also rules for establishing a new CCN. Described are apparatus, method, and a memory storing a computer program for the various embodiments.

Signal instances are detected from within a long period of a received radiofrequency RF signal envelope, grouped according to signal level, and periodicities are determined among the grouped signal instances. Periodicity of one of the groups is matched to a known periodicity, and a frequency domain is estimated at a time instance derived from the matched periodicity. If an expected frequency pattern is found that occupies the derived time instance in the estimated frequency domain, then a receiver is synchronized to a candidate signal that lies within the frequency pattern. Then content of the candidate signal is decoded and that content is used to access a cognitive radio system (e.g., register to the system, start the normal operation in the network such as spectrum detection and/or transmission in a traffic channel, etc.).

The device comprises a first and a second antenna, a receiver operationally coupled to the first antenna and a transceiver operationally coupled to the second antenna. The receiver receives information in bursts on a first band of radio frequencies. A controller of the device measures signal strength of the information received with the receiver, compares the measured signal strength to a reference value and enables operation of the transceiver if the measured signal strength is above the reference value, and limits operation of the transceiver during reception of the bursts if the measured signal strength is below the reference value.

A receiver is synchronised to a signal by studying which among the previously calculated responses to known synchronisation errors corresponds to the response of a real, received signal. A sample sequence decimated from an oversampled signal is compared to model sequences which correspond to decimation at a different distance from the optimum decimation point, and in further processing the employed decimation point is used according to how far from optimum the best correlated model sequence is situated. From the phase angles of the samples, there is calculated an average phase angle change per symbol, and on the basis of that and the known symbol rate, the frequency error in the reception is determined. For each sample of the data burst, there is calculated an individual phase correction by multiplying the individually defined average phase shift per symbol by the distance from a given symbol corresponding to a phase reference value, and by adding the result to said phase reference value. Bursts are received in groups, and timing and frequency errors are predicted on the basis of the trends indicated by preceding groups in order to receive the next group. A unit formed of several groups is used for measuring and predicting the change in the doppler frequency.
