    摘要: A system and method for changing the radiation pattern of an antenna assembly of a satellite in orbit is provided. The antenna assembly includes a reflector antenna fed by a feed assembly. The reflector antenna transmits and receives signals within a radiation pattern. The reflector antenna and the feed assembly are movably mounted to a sliding mechanism so that they can be displaced with respect to one another. The displacement causes defocusing as the reflector antenna is displaced from the focus point. The defocusing causes the radiation pattern to become more compact or broadened. Thus, the radiation pattern of the satellite provided with a single reflector antenna and a single feed element may be changed while the satellite is in orbit. The system and method include gimballing the reflector antenna to steer the radiation pattern.

    摘要: A method and system are disclosed for wide angle multibeam antennas. The method and system involve a multibeam antenna system for generating high performance multiple spot beams. In one or more embodiments, the multibeam antenna system includes an oversized antenna reflector and a plurality of antenna feeds. The oversized antenna reflector has its surface shape optimized from a normal parabolic shape in order to broaden and shape the reflected spot beams to improve antenna performance. In addition, the diameter of the oversized antenna reflector is greater than ((100*λ)/δ), where λ is the wavelength in inches and δ is the beam to beam spacing in degrees. In some embodiments, the ratio of the focal length of the oversized antenna reflector to the diameter of the oversized antenna reflector (F/D) is greater than 0.7. In at least one embodiment, the system further includes an antenna sub-reflector.

    摘要: A unique feed structure for improving the cross-polarization performance of a reflector antenna system is disclosed. According to the present invention, the feed structure is an array including a number of feeds, which are rotated in a predetermined fashion to yield superior cross polarization performance of the antenna system. The array feed in the center of the feed structure is positioned approximately in the focus of the antenna reflector. The array feeds located on the y-axis are slightly rotated in either a clockwise or a counter-clockwise manner. The magnitude of the rotation is proportional to the distance of the feeds from the x-axis along the y-axis. The rotation of the feeds yields significant performance in cross polarization performance, while having little or no co-polarization effect.

    摘要: A dual-reflector antenna system (40) is provided for generating a shaped main beam radiation pattern (20) and at least one additional secondary spot beam radiation pattern (30,32). The antenna system (40) includes a main shaped reflector (10) having a shaped reflective surface (11) operatively coupled to a subreflector (12) for communicating therewith. A main feed horn (14) communicates directly with the subreflector (12) so as to reflect first energy to and from the main reflector (10) within a shaped beam radiation pattern (20). In a preferred embodiment, the subreflector (12) has an ellipsoidal reflective surface (13) which communicates directly with the main reflector (10) via an inverted reflective path (17) which has a converging focal point (18). One or more auxiliary feed horns (24,26) are operatively coupled directly to the main reflector so as to directly communicate therewith and reflect second energy within one or more additional radiation patterns (30,32). The first and second feed horns (24,26) are preferably located separate from the reflective path (17) so as to avoid interference therewith. In an alternate embodiment, a subreflector (12') with a hyperboloidal reflective surface (13') may be used.

Orthogonal mode transducers produce and conduct circularly polarized radio frequency waves within the horn. The reflector, the horn, and the transducers are all coaxially disposed. The antenna produces a torodial radiation pattern in a plane that is substantially orthogonal to the axis of the antenna. Transmit and receive functions may be performed simultaneously using a single reflector and two orthogonal mode transducers.

    摘要: An antenna system and method for generating a desired contiguous spot beam pattern, and a signal is disclosed. The contiguous spot beam generating antenna system comprises a reflector system configured in a side-fed Cassegrain (SFOC) configuration, an array of feed horns comprising at least a subset of feed horns for illuminating the reflector system, and a beamforming network, communicatively coupled to the array of feed horns, for controlling an excitation of the subset of the feed horns in the array of feed horns. The method comprises illuminating a side fed offset Cassegrain reflector system with an RF signal emanating from an array of feed horns, and controlling an excitation of the subset of the feed horns. The present invention provides a beamformer network that can produce uniform performance over wide scan angles, is easier to integrate and test, that can change the beam pattern on orbit, and that provides a more complete utilization of space assets without dramatically increasing the cost of manufacturing and operating a satellite. The use of a SFOC configuration or other wide scanning antenna permits the use of a simple beamforming network while maintaining excellent beam beam scanning characteristics.
