The tripping armature, both under the influence of the magnetic field of the tripping coil in the event of a short-circuit current and under the influence of an increase in temperature brought about by overcurrent, can be deformed and, as a result, the contact point can be caused to open. Uses of a material having a magnetic shape memory effect in a thermal and electromagnetic release are also disclosed.
