    摘要: This invention provides a method of marking a fiber optic indicia on the surface of a fiber optic component and the fiber optic component produced thereby. The fiber optic indicia is represented as a predetermined pattern marked on the fiber optic component and is associated with data about at least one of an optical characteristic and a product characteristic. According to a preferred embodiment, the fiber optic indicia is marked on a chamfered surface of a ferrule. The fiber optic indicia may include at least one alphanumerical character, a symbol, or combinations thereof. The method comprises establishing the predetermined pattern of the fiber optic indicia, providing a fiber optic component for marking, preparing a predetermined portion of a surface of the fiber optic component for marking, and marking the predetermined portion in accordance with the predetermined pattern of the fiber optic indicia.

    摘要: A ferrule is provided that can be fabricated in a repeatable and an efficient manner so as to have a relatively small apex offset. The ferrule includes a front face having a plateau defining a plane that extends perpendicular to the longitudinal axis and a hemispherical portion through which a longitudinal bore opens. The hemispherical portion is generally angled relative to the plateau and to the plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis defined by the plateau. In this regard, a plane coincident with the centerline of the ferrule is disposed at an offset angle, typically between 8° and 12°, relative to the plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis such that the resulting ferrule is an angled physical contact (APC) ferrule. A method and apparatus for fabricating the ferrule are also provided that grind a portion of the front face of the ferrule into a hemispherical shape with a relatively small apex offset regardless of the amount of material that is removed from the front face of the ferrule.

    摘要: A fiber optic connector assembly and method for venting gas inside in a fiber optic connector sub-assembly. The fiber optic connector assembly includes a connector sub-assembly including a ferrule and a ferrule holder having a passage extending therethrough. A stiffener tube having a tube body disposed about a portion of at least one optical fiber supports insertion of the optical fiber into the ferrule holder passage. The stiffener tube contains at least one opening in its tube body configured to vent gas trapped inside the stiffener tube during assembly. In this manner, the trapped gas does not form a gas pocket in the bonding agent, which could compromise bonding among the optical fiber, stiffener tube, and connector sub-assembly.

    摘要: A preassembled multifiber connector is provided that includes a connector housing and a windowless multifiber ferrule that is substantially rectangular in lateral cross-section. The windowless multifiber ferrule can be at least partially disposed within an internal cavity defined by the connector housing to thereby form a multifiber connector that is free of optical fibers. Thus, the multifiber connector is capable of being preassembled prior to inserting the plurality of optical fibers into the optical fiber bores defined by the windowless multifiber ferrule. A corresponding method of preassembling a multifiber connector is therefore also provided according to the present invention. A ferrule is also provided that is capable of being selectively converted from a windowless configuration to a windowed configuration. The ferrule of this embodiment includes a ferrule body that not only defines at least one optical fiber bore, but that also defines a well extending through a side surface of the ferrule body. The ferrule body also includes a removable web at least partially covering the well to thereby define the windowless configuration of the ferrule. The web is capable of being selectively removed from the well such that the uncovered well forms a window through the side surface of the ferrule that opens into the at least one optical fiber bore to thereby define a windowed configuration of the ferrule.

    摘要: A gender selectable fiber optic connector is provided which can be readily converted between male and female configurations following assembly and polishing of the connector. The gender selectable fiber optic connector includes a housing, a ferrule operably connected to the housing such that a forward portion of the ferrule extends beyond the housing, and a shroud adapted to be mounted upon the forward portion of the ferrule such that the forward portion of the ferrule extends through a passageway defined by the shroud. In order to alter the gender of the fiber optic connector, the shroud has both male and female configurations. In this regard, the male configuration of the shroud includes at least one guide pin extending lengthwise through the passageway defined by the shroud for engaging a lengthwise extending alignment groove defined by the ferrule in order to produce a male fiber optic connector. In contrast, the female configuration of the shroud is free of guide pins such that mounting the female configuration of the shroud upon the ferrule produces a female fiber optic connector. In addition to the gender selectable fiber optic connector and the associated shroud, a method of fabricating the gender selectable fiber optic connector is provided. Moreover, an outlet assembly is also provided for receiving a fiber optic connector having a rectangular shape in lateral cross-section, such as an MT connector or the gender selectable fiber optic connector having a rectangularly-shaped shroud, and for precisely aligning the rectangularly-shaped fiber optic connector with a substantially cylindrical ferrule, such as a DC or QC ferrule, so as to increase the flexibility with which different types of ferrules can be interconnected as well as the precision of the resulting interconnection.

    摘要: Disclosed are optical assemblies such as field-installable connectors having a laser-shaped optical fiber along with methods for laser-shaping the optical fiber. The field-installable connector includes a ferrule having front and rear opposed faces and at least one fiber bore defined longitudinally therethrough, a stub optical fiber having a distal end with a laser-shaped end face is disposed within the at least one fiber bore of the ferrule and extends a predetermined distance beyond the rear face of the ferrule, and an alignment feature operable for aligning the stub optical fiber with the field optical fiber. One method of laser-shaping the optical fiber includes rotating the optical fiber and sweeping a beam of a laser across the optical fiber and then essentially stopping the rotation of the optical fiber and sweeping the beam through the optical fiber to cut the same with a tapered and angled end face. Other methods may include shifting the laser relative to the optical fiber to create a “pencil-tip” end on the optical fiber.

The fiber optic connector assembly includes a connector sub-assembly including a ferrule and a ferrule holder having a passage extending therethrough.
