A system and method for monitoring whether a resident is away from home or inactive within the home. A sensor, which includes a transmitter, a processor, a timer, and a detector, watches for motion to occur within a home. Upon sensing motion, the sensor sends a first signal indicative of the motion if the timer is not currently running and waits for the motion to end. If the timer already is running, the timer is restarted at zero. Upon expiration of a predetermined timing period, the sensor transmits a second signal indicative of inactivity. By comparing the timing of the second signal and the predetermined timing period, with a third signal sent by an exterior door sensor, a determination can be made whether the resident has left the home or is inactive within the home. The system includes a database, a CPU and State Model for determining the activity state of a home.

The system may also include a processor-based system that may receive signals representative of the motion and/or location of the person from the sensors. The system may establish and store a travel time for a path traveled by the person through the structure based on the signals representative of the motion and/or location of the person. The system may identify at least one path from among various travel paths traveled by the person through the structure as having a consistent travel time over a period of time. The system also identifies a change in the person's walking speed by identifying changes in the travel time for the at least one path traveled by the person through the structure.

A variety of sensors distributed around the home collect data on activity in the home. The data is communicated to a remote monitoring center and collated in a database according to applicable time slots. The time slots for a twenty-four hour cycle are at least three and can be as many as forty-eight or more. Historical activity time lines are created and a buffer time is added to and offset from the maximum historical activity time line. If a new data point comes in that exceeds both the maximum historical activity time line and the buffer time, an alert is issued indicating the activity is unusual.

Further, a reference plane disposed in the field of view is identified. Additionally, one or more regions in the initial range image indicative of one or more objects disposed above the reference plane in the field of view are determined. Further, the DAS regenerates a range image corresponding to the field of view after a determined time period. The regenerated range image is compared with the initial range image to determine if the regenerated range image comprises a new object disposed above the reference plane. The new object is determined to be the fallen person if a height of the new object is less than a determined height and a volume and/or a surface area of the new object is greater than a determined value.

The radars non-invasively detect one or more motion and/or physiological parameters corresponding to the subject. The motion parameters comprise one or more activity levels and the physiological parameters comprise one or more of heartbeat and respiration. Further, one or more patterns in the motion parameters detected over a designated motion period of time are determined. Additionally, one or more patterns in the physiological parameters detected over the designated physiological period of time are also determined. The systems then assess a health condition of the subject based on the determined patterns of the motion parameters and/or the determined patterns of the physiological parameters.

The system includes an identifying device to enroll the group of enrollees into the system by measuring identifying information. The system further includes a gait monitoring device to measure a sample gait characteristic during an enrollment phase, and to measure a gait characteristic of each enrollee subsequent to the enrollment phase. The system further includes an alerting device to receive an alert signal from the gait monitoring device, when the measured gait characteristic of a respective enrollee exceeds a safety threshold. The system further includes a display device to issue a trend report of the measured gait characteristic of a selectable enrollee for a selectable time period.
