A process for printing an image on a substrate including applying thereto a composition including a liquid medium and a compound of Formula (1) A-N═N-L-N═N-A wherein: each A independently is optionally substituted aryl or heteroaryl; and L is an optionally substituted, optionally metallised 1,8-dihydroxynaphthylene group; provided that: (i) at most one of the groups represented by A has a hydroxy substituent ortho to the —N═N— groups shown in Formula (1); and (ii) Formula (1) is not: Also claimed are compositions for printing, compounds and processes for making the compounds.

A toner resin composition comprising a toner resin and the metal salt or complex of a carbocyclic hydroxy caboxylic acid containing at least one methylene group optionally substituted by hydroxy or amino such as 4-(N-methyl-N-2-hydroxyethyl)aminomethyl-3-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid. Iron and zinc salts are preferred.

The use of substituted phthalocyanines for the generation of singlet oxygen in which at least one of the peripheral carbon atoms in the 1-16 positions of the phthalocyanine nucleus (M.sub.k Pc) of Formula (1): ##STR1## wherein: M is selected from H, metal, halometal, oxymetal and hydroxymetal; and k is the inverse of 1/2 of the valency of M; is linked via an oxygen atom to an aromatic radical and the remaining peripheral carbon atoms are unsubstituted or substituted by any combination of atoms or groups and sulphonated derivatives thereof provided that the phthalocyanine absorbs electromagnetic radiation at a wavelength from 650 nm to 800 nm.

An ink composition comprising a medium comprising at least one of a low melting point solid, an organic solvent and a mixture of water and one or more water-soluble organic solvent(s); and a mixture of a first, second, third and fourth dye, each of which is of Formula (1) or a salt thereof: ##STR1## wherein: X is a labile or non labile atom or group; A and B are each independently an optionally substituted phenylene group; one or R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 is H and the other is sulpho; one of R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 is H and the other is sulpho; R.sup.5 and R.sup.6 are each independently C.sub.1-4 -alkyl. A compound of the Formula (1) and salts thereof: ##STR1## wherein: A is optionally substituted phenyl or optionally substituted naphthyl; R.sup.1 is NR.sup.4 R.sup.5 ; R.sup.2 is H, halo, --COOH, --SO.sub.2 0H, optionally substituted alkyl, optionally substituted alkoxy, or optionally substituted alkylthio; R.sup.3, R.sup.4 & R.sup.5 are each independently H or optionally substituted alkyl; T is H or sulpho; and B is H, optionally substituted alkyl or optionally substituted phenyl; provided that the compound does not contain a piperazinyl group. The compound is suitable for use as a black colorant in ink jet printing inks especially for printing on plain paper.

A phthalocyanine of Formula (1): ##STR1## wherein: M.sub.k PC is a phthalocyanine nucleus of Formula (2): ##STR2## M is a metal atom, a chloro-metal group, and oxy-metal group or hydrogen; k is inverse of 1/2 valency of M; R and R.sup.1 each independently is an organic radical;R.sup.2 is H or optionally substituted alkyl;a is an average value from 15 to 8;b is an average value from 1 to 8; anda+b is from 15 to 16; and sulphonated derivatives thereof and process for their preparation.The phthalocyanines of the present invention are useful for absorbing electro-magnetic radiation from for example a laser source and may be used in a coating for optical data storage disks, or in security applications such as printing banknotes or cheques, or in the preparation of lithographic printing plates or in washing powders to assist in bleaching.
