A technique is specified for the output of fonts on high resolution output devices, such as photosetters in particular. A processor unit optically scales a digitally stored font, by selecting a single master font in a digitized contour coding, in which the contours for each letter are provided with delimiting discrete control points and additionally with instructions, such as those stipulated for the "Intelligent Font Scaling"; by re-scaling the master font with a factor to the desired point size, and by utilizing the instructions in order to steadily vary the stroke thickness of the linearly re-scaled letters in a primary pre-set factor dependency, wherein the stroke thickness is increased for factors smaller than one and is decreased for factors larger than one. The font can also be typographically expanded and condensed which means keeping the widths of the vertical stems during broadening or narrowing, respectively.

Record quality of a bit map of a newspaper page, for example, is checked directly on a display screen without previously manufacturing a material image carrier, such as a film. For this purpose, it is read out in multi-line fashion, preferably in 4 - line fashion. Squares consisting of m (preferably likewise 4) successive points of n (preferably 4) superimposed lines are grouped into one "superpixel" each, and its gray value, for example, is determined as an average of the black-white values of the individual pixels forming the square. The superpixel is displayed with its gray value as a single point on the display screen instead of the m.times.n square.

Text and graphics are represented on video screens having a given raster of screen pixels in x- and y-directions and video refresh memories. The necessary glyphs are loaded in an outline format from a memory and get rastered alongside their contours (gridwalk). In order to achieve a better quality of display, the glyphs are represented in grey by calculation of positions, rotations and scalings at a higher resolving fine-raster where there are m fine-pixels in x- and n fine-pixels in y-direction for each screen pixel (m, n>1) and each glyph is rastered alongside its outline either as bitmap or as run length code. For each of the m.times.n fine-pixels, screen pixels are generated according to the character's text position in fine-resolution by adding the bit values of corresponding black fine-pixels and calculating a grey-value according to their sum in relation to all m.times.n fine-pixels and storing these grey-values into the video refresh memory having a depth sufficient to store the maximum of different grey values (for example: 2bit, halfbyte, byte).

An automatic technique and an apparatus for digitizing of line graphics, letters, etc., which includes the following steps: The image information is obtained from scanning the master and is stored in digital form and thereafter converted into vector data. The vector image is subjected to a shape recognition program and image elements, such as straight lines, sharp and rounded corners, narrow, average and shallow curves, turning points and tangential points are identified. The image elements are subjected to a spline fit. From the spline curve, as many coordinate pairs are calculated as are needed for an adequate description for the contour line, and, following the rules for the IKARUS concept, a digitized version of the contour is generated.

Method and apparatus for justifying text rendered from a digital font at an output pointsize. The invention includes using a kerning value for a character pair including a space character and a nonspace character to place the nonspace character at a margin. The invention can be used in conjunction with a font having first kerning metrics for a small pointsize and for a different large pointsize. The kerning value can be obtained by interpolating the small pointsize metrics and the large pointsize metrics.

A computer-implemented method for spacing characters rendered from a digital font at an output pointsize. The font has first spacing metrics for a small pointsize and for a different large pointsize. The method includes calculating a separation by interpolating the small pointsize metrics and the large pointsize metrics and spacing the pair as a function of the calculated separation. Embodiments may include the following features. The font has spacing metrics for at least three different pointsizes. The spacing metrics include left sidebearings, right sidebearings, or kerning values. A kerning value for a character pair is generated by interpolating a first kerning value at a small pointsize and a second kerning value at a large pointsize to the output pointsize. The invention also features a computer program on a computer-readable medium having instructions for rendering characters and two sets of spacing metrics at two different pointsizes. The invention also features a computer program having instructions for rendering a set of characters and a set of kerning values for all pairs consisting of one character from the set of characters and the space character.

A technique is demonstrated for the output of fonts on high resolution output devices, such as phototypesetters in particular, in which a processor unit optically scales a digitally stored font, expands/condenses and generates a desired weight of the font to be distributed. Two previously generated master fonts with varying weights in a digitized contour coding are used, by which a majority of the contours of each letter are provided with delimiting discrete control points and additionally with instructions, such as those stipulated for "Intelligent Font Scaling". The output font with the desired weight is generated through linear interpolation between the two master fonts. To optically scale to the desired point size, the output font is re-scaled with a factor to the desired point size and the instructions are applied in order to steadily vary the stroke width of the letters, linearly re-scaled with the factor, in a primary pre-set factor dependency whereby the stroke width is increased for factors smaller than 1% and decreased for factors larger than 1%. The font is typographically correctly expanded and condensed, in that the optically scaled output font is brought to the desired width through linear expansion or condensation with a second factor, whereby the instructions are applied in order to hold the stroke width constant during linear expansion or condensation of the letters and in this way to only broaden or narrow the contours.
