摘要： Provided herein multifunctional compounds that bind and modify nucleic acids, forming crosslinks between the nucleic acid strands. In particular embodiments, the multifunctional nucleic-acid binding/modifying compounds are selective for nucleic acids of non-viable cells and viruses (i.e., they are excluded from or degraded within viable cells and viruses), and therefore find use in methods for detecting or discriminating viable and non-viable cells/viruses and nucleic acids therefrom.
