An electron discharge device is provided for a system involving illumination by suitable sonic energy radiator means of any opaque, turbulent or dense medium and converting the returned acoustic signals into a video output signal for remote or direct display. Storage, as well as integration of acoustic signals through a process of correlation in a device having a unique crossed field electron beam deflection system is provided together with the signal impinging and generation means in an integral evacuated envelope. A non-scanning flood type electron beam continuously samples the voltage on an acoustic-responsive conversion plate and yields a modulated secondary electron emission beam whose phase and amplitude is that of the impinging acoustic signals.

A microwave energy device having cavity resonator means is electrically tuneable by means coupled to the resonator means including a short-circuited waveguide transmission line adapted to convert linearly polarized wave energy to circularly polarized wave energy and to receive and propagate such circularly polarized waves. A ferromagnetic material element is magnetized at a value below the saturation magnetization value (4 pi Ms) of the material. An electrical field coil provides a variable phase shift of the circularly polarized wave energy traversing the unsaturated element in one direction and, upon reflection by the short circuit, in a second direction. The phase shift of the circularly polarized waves traversing the partially magnetized unsaturated ferromagnetic material yields a tuning system for microwave generators of linearly polarized energy with an element of relatively short overall length.

An annular electron beam interacts with a slow wave structure having a periodicity in a specified circumferential direction and a substantially logarithmically continuously scaled or periodic characteristic in a radial direction. The electron stream is translated along a helical path bounded by conical members emanating from a common point of origin and the interaction of the electrons and circuit waves is generally in a transverse reentrant direction with suitable spatial harmonics. Elements of both the ''''O'''' and ''''M'''' type electron stream interaction coexist with appropriate adjustments of the DC fields in the bidimensional interaction space. An extremely wide bandwidth of as high as a decade for microwave frequency amplifiers as well as oscillators in either the forward or backward wave modes is provided with the disclosed structure.
