A method is disclosed for producing a reinforced component from a composite material (MMC). A metallic matrix material is reinforced by embedded fibers or particles, for which purpose a semi-finished product is prepared that comprises fibers and particles or both, together with a metallic matrix material. Forming is effected by thixoforming in a mold at a temperature above the solidus temperature and below the liquidus temperature of the metallic matrix material. The method allows to manufacture near-net-shaped products with excellent mechanical properties.

The invention relates to a fiber-reinforced ceramic body and a method for producing same. The ceramic body consists of a core and a boundary layer (93, 94) which is joined to the core and has at least one outer surface (96, 97) which can preferably be subjected to tribological stress. The core consists of one or more layers (92) of which at least one is reinforced with long fibers. The boundary layer (93, 94) is reinforced with short fibers. The fibers are preferably reaction-bonded in a matrix by melt infiltration and are made of high-temperature resistant fibers with covalent bonds on the basis of silicon, carbon, boron or nitrogen.

The present invention relates to a casting mould for casting a casting, in particular an engine block for a combustion engine, as well as to the use of such a casting mould, comprising mould parts 1, 2, 3 and casting cores 4, 5, 6, 7 produced from moulding sand, and at least one casting core 4, 5, 6, 7 for the formation of a space in the casting. The casting mould according to the invention makes it possible, in a simple manner, for castings to be produced in which at least one locally closely confined section is formed with a microstructure which differs from the remainder of the casting. This is achieved in that a section of the casting core 4, 5, 6, 7 is formed by a chill 9 which is manufactured from a material of which the thermal conductivity is many times higher than the thermal conductivity of the other section 8 of the casting core 4, 5, 6, 7, consisting of moulding sand.
