Abstract: An apparatus for countergravity casting a metallic material, comprises: a crucible for holding melted metallic material; a casting chamber for containing a mold; a fill tube capable of extending into the crucible to communicate melted metallic material to the casting chamber; a gas source coupled a headspace of the melting vessel to allow the gas source to pressurize said headspace to establish a pressure differential to force the melted metallic material upwardly through said fill tube into said mold; and means for gettering sulfur.

Abstract: A joining method includes performing a first heat treatment step on a first superalloy workpiece and a second superalloy workpiece wherein at least one of the first and second superalloy workpieces include a gamma matrix phase and a gamma-prime precipitate phase. The first and second superalloy workpieces are joined using a solid state joining process, subjected to a post-weld stress relief operation and a final aging heat treatment.

At least one of the inner platform, root, and/or outer platform comprises one or more pieces of a first alloy. One or more pieces of a second alloy form a leading edge section of the airfoil. One or more pieces of a third alloy form a trailing edge section of the airfoil. One or more pieces of a fourth alloy form a spar of the airfoil between the leading edge section and trailing edge section and extending into said at least one of the inner platform, root, and/or outer platform.

Abstract: An article comprises a first portion comprising a first alloy and a second portion comprising a second alloy that is metallurgically bonded to the first portion to form a monolithic article. The metallurgical bonding involves the application of an electrical current across the bond line and results in a retention of a metallurgical structure of the first portion and of a metallurgical structure of the second portion immediately adjacent to a bond line. The first portion has a first dominant property and the second portion has a second dominant property. The first dominant property is different from the second dominant property. The first dominant property is selected to handle operating conditions at a first position of the article where the first portion is located and the second dominant property is selected to handle operating conditions at a second position of the article where the second portion is located.
