摘要: A collapsible steering assembly features a guide bracket for attachment to a vehicle. A steering mechanism is interconnected with the guide bracket by a steering mechanism support. A plurality of guide rods are arranged about a common collapse axis and extend in non-parallel relationship to a longitudinal axis of the steering mechanism. The guide rods support the steering mechanism for axial movement along the collapse axis in response to a predetermined collapse force on the steering mechanism.

摘要: The invention provides an apparatus and method for absorbing energy in response to a vehicle crash. The apparatus includes a knee bolster disposable in a vehicle for absorbing an impact from at least one knee of a driver. The apparatus also includes a connecting device associated with the knee bolster. The connecting device includes a breakable portion for releasably connecting the knee bolster to the vehicle such that the knee bolster breaks away from the vehicle under predetermined conditions. The method according to the invention includes the step of disposing a knee bolster in a vehicle for absorbing an impact from at least one knee of a driver. The method also includes the step of releasably connecting the knee bolster to the vehicle such that the knee bolster breaks away from the vehicle under predetermined conditions with a connecting device associated with the knee bolster and having a breakable portion.

摘要: A steering column assembly (10) for a vehicle includes first and second members (12, 14) engaged for movement relative to one another along one of a tilting path (16) and a telescoping path. The steering column assembly (10) also includes an electric lock (18) operable to lock the first and second members (12, 14) into a locked configuration that restricts movement and an unlocked configuration that permits movement between the members. The steering column assembly (10) also includes a sensor (20) operable to sense a vehicle crash condition and then emit a crash signal to a controller (22) that controls the electric lock (18) to change from the locked configuration to the unlocked configuration in response to the signal.

摘要: A method and apparatus for moving a portion of a vehicle hood away from a portion of the vehicle, the apparatus comprising: a first portion; a second portion, comprising; a fixed portion and a slidable portion slidably mounted to the first portion for movement between a first position and a second position, the fixed portion comprising a first opening at one end and an elongated opening, the slidable portion comprising a second opening juxtaposed to the first opening when the slidable portion is in the first position; a first connecting member being pivotally secured to the first portion at one end and releaseably secured to the second portion at another end by a pivot pin that is rotatably secured within the first opening and the second opening when the slidable portion is in the first position; a second connecting member being pivotally secured to the first portion at one end and slidably secured to the second portion at another end by a pin that is slidably received within the elongated opening of the fixed portion and an elongated opening of the slidable portion; and an actuation device for providing a force to move the slidable portion from the first position to the second position and thereafter move the pin of the second connecting member within the elongated openings of the fixed portion and the slidable portion to cause the second portion to move away from the first portion.
