Expressed Sequence Tags (ESTs) isolated from the Western Corn Rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte, are disclosed. The invention encompasses nucleic acid molecules that encode D. v. virgifera protein homologs and fragments thereof. In addition, antibodies capable of binding the proteins are encompassed by the present invention. The disclosed ESTs have particular utility in isolating genes and promoters, identifying and mapping the genes involved in developmental and metabolic pathways, and determining gene function. The ESTs provide a unique molecular tool for the targeting and isolation of novel genes for plant protection and improvement. The invention also relates to methods of using the disclosed nucleic acid molecules, proteins, fragments of proteins, and antibodies, for example, for gene identification and analysis, and preparation of constructs.

The invention provides transgenic plants and transformed host cells which express modified cry 3B genes with enhanced toxicity to Coleopteran insects. Also disclosed are methods of making and using these transgenic plants, methods of making recombinant host cells expressing these .delta.-endotoxins, and methods of killing insects such as Colorado potato beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata), southern corn rootworm (Diabrotica undecimpunctata howardi Barber) and western corn rootworm (Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte.

Disclosed are nucleic acid segments comprising synthetically-modified genes encoding Coleopteran-toxic B. thuringiensis δ-endotoxins. Also disclosed are methods of using these genes for the recombinant expression of polypeptides, the preparation of vectors containing the genes, and methods for transforming suitable host cells.

Methods are described for dilating biological conduits by removing elastin and remodeling collagens in the wall of the conduit. Methods include the use of agents that increase the release of endogenous elastase and collagenase in the wall of the conduit, either by cells that are normally present in the wall of the conduit or by inflammatory cells that are attracted to the conduit, thereby providing additional conduit dilation. Methods also include the use of agents that increase conduit wall permeability and expose elastin and collagen fibers. Methods also include removing components of the extracellular matrix of arteries and veins leading to an inhibition of intimal hyperplasia in the wall of the vessels by decreasing biomechanical stimuli directed toward the cells in the wall of the vessel. Methods further include the use of agent that degrade micro fibers, in addition to elastin, in order to decrease the resynthesis of elastin. Methods also include the use of agent that stabilize the diameter of aneurysmal arteries by blocking cell surface receptors in the wall of the aneurysmal artery that are important in the recruitment of inflammatory cells.
摘要:
The present invention describes compositions and methods that are useful in the control of lepidopteran insect pests, and more particularly describes nucleotide sequences for use in plants that encode full-length and truncated insecticidal toxins, as well as chimeric toxins. The nucleotide sequences of the present invention exhibit modifications that, when compared to the native sequences obtained from Bacillus thuringiensis species, make them particularly useful for enhanced, improved, and or optimized expression in monocot and dicot plant species. Using methods well known to those skilled in the art the nucleotide sequences described herein can be used to transform plant cells and plant tissue in order to produce transgenic plants that express the encoded proteins, therefore conferring upon the transgenic plants the ability to resist insect infestation.
