    摘要: A method for making a composite material for implantation in the body which is able to act as a matrix for the biological ingrowth of bone and is suitable as a bearing surface. The method consists of compression molding the implant by forming to net shape the first material to its desired end device and inserting it into a mold cavity. Polyethylene in is then placed onto the first material, and the mold is subjected to heat and pressure for specific time durations. The end result is polyethylene which is fully interdigitated into the first material to a desired depth which is controlled by temperature, pressure and time constraints. The present method creates an interface between the first material and the polyethylene which is securely fixed and does not allow micro and macro motion between the two materials. The compression molding process optimizes the mechanical and wear properties of the polyethylene, and enables the new material to provide a smooth and frictionless bearing surface on one side of the composite material. The opposite side of the composite material is porous and thus allows for biological ingrowth of new bone or cement interdigitation. The first material provides structural stability, yet allows flexibility and load transfer to improve biological interface characteristics and a more normal bony remodeling that are lacking in other acetabular cups. An acetabular cup constructed with the composite material is also disclosed.

    摘要: A procedure for contouring the wall of a femoral cavity in a femur for the reception of a femoral stem to be seated within the femoral cavity employs a femoral broach which includes cutting teeth aligned along peripherally spaced apart longitudinal rows extending along a portion of the outer surface of the blade of the broach for forming a multiplicity of alternating longitudinally extending generally parallel grooves and ribs in the wall of the cavity, at least some of the grooves being contiguous with harder portions of the bone of the femur while the ribs are comprised of softer portions of the bone so that completion of the contouring will be signalled by bottoming of the blade of the broach upon the harder portions of the bone and upon implant, the femoral stem will be seated upon the harder portions of bone while the softer portions of bone will be compressed between the femoral stem and the harder portions of bone to accomplish fixation by an interference fit. Upon completion of the contouring of the wall of the cavity, and prior to withdrawal of the blade of the femoral broach, the seated blade of the broach serves as a true gauge of the subsequent location of the femoral stem relative to the femur. A vented, interchangeable distal tip on the blade of the broach pilots the broach for precise alignment of the blade during the contouring procedure.

    摘要: A tibial component of a prosthetic knee implant has a tibial tray, a post extending axially downwardly from a generally laterally central location beneath the tibial tray, and a keel including flanges extending laterally outwardly from the post and making an angle with one another so as to be directed toward relatively denser portions of the bone of the proximal tibia, and a plurality of ribs extending axially along each flange and spaced laterally from one another along the flange for enhancing the affixation and stability of the tibial component when implanted in the proximal tibia. Apparatus for preparing the proximal tibia for the reception of the tibial component includes a tibial punch and a tower selectively located at the proximal tibia, the tower having an axially extending guide bushing for placement above the proximal tibia and a channel extending laterally into the guide bushing for enabling the tibial punch to be inserted laterally into the guide bushing and then moved axially downwardly into the proximal tibia, while guided by the guide bushing, to establish a cavity in the proximal tibia for reception of the tibial component.
