An asset management radio location system uses time-of-arrival differentiation for random and repetitive spread spectrum, short duration transmissions from object-attached tags, to geolocate objects within a monitored environment. An object location processor is coupled to distributed tag transmission readers over signal transport paths having different transport delays, and carries out time-of-arrival differentiation of first-to-arrive transmissions from a tag to determine where its object is located. Geolocation errors associated with variations in parameters of the signal transport paths are effectively removed by installing one or more ‘reference’ tags, whose geolocations are precisely known. Using a background calibration routine that is exercised at a relatively low cycle rate, emissions from the reference tags are processed and coupled to the geolocation processor. The calculated geolocations of the reference tags are compared with their actual locations. Any offset between the two geolocation values is used to adjust time delay offsets associated with signal transport paths between the readers and the geolocation processor.

A distributed radio geo-location and tracking system has a distributed subsystem architecture that distributes its processing workload over a plurality of information handling and processing subsystems. For maximum detection capability, each of a plurality of tag emission receivers is equipped with a circularly polarized, omnidirectional antenna, to provide hemispherical coverage. The receivers are coupled to a partitioned plurality of detection processors, that are coupled via distributed association processors to multiple location processors. Each detection processor demodulates and time stamps received energy correlated to known spreading codes of the tags, to associate received energy with only one tag. It transmits a message containing this information over a communication framework to an association processor. The computational load is equitably distributed by a flow control mechanism among available association processors, with all receptions of a single tag transmission being directed to the same association processor. An association processor organizes received messages by tag and time-of-arrival (TOA), and transmits association reports over an association communication process of the communication framework to one of plural distributed location processors. A location processor determines the geographical locations of tags using the TOA information in the association reports.

A plurality of access point stations receive and transmit communication signals within a wireless local area network. A processor is operatively connected to each of the access point stations and operative for processing communication signals received from the mobile station and, in one embodiment, determining which communication signals are first-to-arrive signals and conducting differentiation of the first-to-arrive signals to locate a mobile station. Delayed versions of at least one interference signal are weighted and the amplitude and phase controlled with weighted functions W1, W2 . . . Wn. The resultant weighted replicas are summed to determine an approximation of disbursed interference for cancelling interference. The location system can include a tag transmitter and spaced monitoring receivers and processor.

One method may include receiving a plurality of wireless signals via a plurality of frequency channels, storing representations of the plurality of wireless signals in a signal buffer, and receiving a trigger request for a signal of interest. In this regard, the trigger request may have been generated based on an analysis of at least one wireless signal within the plurality of wireless signals to thereby identify the signal of interest. The method may also include retrieving a representation of the signal of interest from the signal buffer based on the trigger request, and analyzing the retrieved representation of the signal of interest with associated signal characteristics to determine a location of a source of the signal of interest. A system is provided for tracking an asset within a geographic area. The system includes an antenna mast supportable by, and extending upward from, an object configured to move or facilitate movement of the asset. The antenna mast is capable of supporting a plurality of wireless locating units of a plurality of geo-spatial positioning systems, which are configured to locate a respective one or more locating units, and thereby the asset, within the geographic area. The system also includes a controller positionable on the object and configured to control operation of the wireless locating units. The controller is further configured to direct transmission of data to a host via one of the locating units or another wireless transmitter, and in a manner that accounts for a wireless link between the respective locating unit or other wireless transmitter and the host.
