The invention is a method for selecting, producing, and delivering a finished mail piece. The method includes the step of selecting, at an initiating node, a set of parameters which together comprise a mail piece to be produced at a remote location. The selection is made from a series of menus within a program resident within a data processing system. Among the parameters which can be selected or determined are the destination address, type of delivery service to be used, and a choice of the media stock upon which a selected text can be printed. Additionally, a choice of language for the text can be made, and an account number for debiting the cost of the transaction may be entered. The selected parameters are transmitted to a data center which reads the destination address and then determines the most appropriate destination node. It is possible for the data center to be co-located with the initiating node or, to be the destination node. The data center, which maintains all data with respect to a particular transaction, will transmit the selected parameters to the destination node. Upon receipt of the data, the destination node prints the selected text upon a media which is inserted into an envelope with the destination address printed upon the envelope. The envelope is then franked in proper local currency and delivered to a local postal stream for final delivery to the destination address.

The invention is a method and system for determining a weight for use in a shipping application and for the establishment of a trainable weights database and a weight database training object. The method begins with establishing a database linked to the shipping application. The weight of a parcel to be shipped is determined by comparing a data entry at the shipping application with a set of data entries resident in the database. The comparison is performed by entering a description of the parcel to the system, and parsing the description to determine whether or not the data includes a known symbology or barcode. If it does, then the method matches the description with a locator function to locate the required weight; otherwise, the description is further parsed into match fields. If the comparison determines a weight, then the weight is returned to the shipping application for entry in an appropriate field; however, if the comparison does not return a weight, then a weight is determined by selecting an option from among a set of weight input options which includes an auto search mode. The determined weight is then input to the database in respect of a set of parameters resident in the data entry so that the determined weight can be used for subsequent transactions. Another aspect of the present invention, is a method of establishing and utilizing a weight database training object which is invoked to determine a weight to enter into the weight field of the shipping application.

The invention is a method of accounting for a transaction cost and currency exchange relative to customer accounts in a hybrid mail system. The method begins by establishing a data center, a first remote data entry point, and a second remote data entry point which has mailpiece production means. The first remote data entry point, the second remote data entry point, and/or the data center may be co-located. A set of parameters which define a mailpiece, a unit cost where known for each parameter, a destination for the mailpiece, and a choice of debiting or crediting a customer account are determined at the first remote data entry point. The parameters and known costs point are transmitted to the data center and to the second remote data entry point. The mailpiece is produced at the second remote data entry point and a unit cost for each of the mailpiece production and delivery elements is calculated at the second remote data entry point and transmitted to the data center. A total unit cost of the transaction is calculated at the data center and then converted to a transaction cost by multiplying the total unit cost by a currency conversion factor. The transaction cost is then entered into customer account database, a transaction database, and transmitted to the first remote data entry point; additionally, a billing statement is generated by the data center in respect of the transaction and a similar statement can be generated by the first remote data entry point for the benefit of the transaction initiator.

The invention is a method for brokering carrier capacity. The method comprises a dual path; one path that allows entry into a data processing system of available carrier capacity which is comprised of a list of parameters which define that capacity, and the second path which allows access to that capacity. Each entry point to the system has data entry means for either entering carrier capacity or entering a request for available routes, or both. Available capacity entries are confirmed, saved in a transportation database, and assigned a pre-transaction code. Path two involves entering a request for available capacity by defining a requested route based upon a list of parameters. The system compares available capacity with the requested route to determine whether or not a match exists. The system operator selects an appropriate matched entry which must then be confirmed. Upon confirmation, selected matches are saved to a transaction database and assigned a transaction code. If no match is determined, then the requested route data is saved to a request database. A request database locator program is then activated for the purpose of querying the transportation database at pre-determined intervals to determine if a matching capacity has been subsequently entered. If a matching capacity has been subsequently entered, then a prompt is sent to the requesting site indicating that a match has been found and that confirmation is required; otherwise, the request database locator program will continue to query the transportation database until the routine is terminated.

The invention is a method and system for listing and brokering a commodity and its financial derivatives. The method identifies a plurality of characteristics of a particular commodity, and then enters those characteristics into the database of a data processing system utilizing a real-time clock. An exchange market for the commodity is established based upon a pre-selected set of its characteristics; and, after a market price for the commodity has been set, a class (or classes) of financial derivatives is established together with a financial exchange market for those derivatives. The characteristics of the derivatives comprise: a common descriptive link between varied commodity types; a contract length that runs from the purchase date of the contract to the performance date for the commodity; and, a contract price. The system of the subject invention comprises a number of elements which include: data processing means; means for determining whether a match exists based upon a comparison of the commodity offered for sale and that requested for purchase or exchange; display means; means for selecting the matched entry for purchase and/or exchange; and means for determining and selecting a class of financial derivatives. The data processing means of the system, in turn, further comprises a system controller which is further comprised of: a data processing system; data entry means; memory means; and, communication means for communicating data between the system controller and a plurality of input and output points.
