Abstract: Methods and equipment are provided for stimulating recovery of hydrocarbons from a subterranean formation traversed by a wellbore, which employ at least one self-resonating nozzle. Fluid under pressure is supplied to the at least one self-resonating nozzle to create a channel in a surface of the subterranean formation facing the at least one self-resonating nozzle. In embodiments, the equipment can be a downhole tool or completion equipment (such as a liner) that is deployed in the wellbore.

Abstract: Transverse fractures are formed from a borehole using hydraulic fracturing fluid while maintaining the downhole pressure close to a target pressure. The target pressure is selected to be greater than the expected transverse fracture initiation pressure at predetermined weak points, such as notches, and less than the expected longitudinal fracture initiation pressure. The process can be repeated to form multiple transverse fractures by pumping diversion composition(s).

Abstract: Improved notching techniques are described for transverse fracture initiation from the wellbore (cased or open). One or more auxiliary notches are formed that are sealed from borehole pressure increase, yet still deformable under the fracturing pressure in the wellbore. Through the use of the auxiliary notches, lower fracturing pressure and/or shallower notches can be used when compared to known notching techniques without auxiliary notching. The described approaches can also provide greater control over the initial direction of the fracture.

Abstract: A scratch tester has at least one cutter that moves simultaneously both rotationally and axially relative to the rock it is cutting. When rotational and axial movements are constant, the cutter generates a helical groove in the rock. In borehole embodiments, the scratch tester is fixed at a desired location using centralizers, and the cutter is provided on a motorized platform/track that translates between the centralizers and rotates around a central axis. The cutter faces outward and extends via a cutter arm to engage and carve a helical groove in the borehole wall. A laboratory scratch tester includes a holder for a solid cylindrical core sample and a motorized translating frame on which a cutter extends. The cutter is directed toward the core sample, and the holder with the core sample is rotated by a motor so that as the cutter translates relative thereto, a helical groove is cut thereinto.
