Abstract: A process for preparing an alkylene oxide comprising contacting an alkyl phenyl hydroperoxide with an alkene in an epoxidation reaction to obtain an alkylene oxide and an alkyl phenyl alcohol, wherein the alkyl phenyl hydroperoxide is prepared by a process comprising reacting an alkyl aryl compound and oxygen to produce a reaction mixture comprising alkyl phenyl hydroperoxide, alkyl aryl compound and oxygen; separating at least a part of the reaction mixture into a product stream comprising alkyl phenyl hydroperoxide and an alkyl aryl compound stream; mixing at least a part of the alkyl aryl compound stream with a basic aqueous solution; separating at least a part of the mixture of alkyl aryl compound and basic aqueous solution with the help of a coalescer to obtain an organic phase containing alkyl aryl compound, and an aqueous phase; and recycling at least a part of the organic phase to the reacting step.

Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the preparation of styrene or substituted styrenes comprising the steps of: (a) subjecting a feed containing 1-phenyl ethanol or substituted 1-phenyl ethanol to a dehydration treatment in the presence of a suitable dehydration catalyst; (b) subjecting the resulting product mixture to a separation treatment, thus obtaining a stream containing water and styrene or substituted styrene and a residual fraction containing heavy ends; (c) treating the stream containing water and styrene or substituted styrene with a base; (d) separating the treated stream of step (c) into a styrene or substituted styrene-rich product stream and a styrene or substituted styrene-lean waste water stream; (e) treating the styrene or substituted styrene-lean waste water stream with steam in a stripping column, thus obtaining a treated waste water stream and a treated stream comprising steam and styrene or substituted styrene.

Abstract: The present invention provides a process for preparing a catalyst, wherein said process comprises:—(i) preparing a mixture of one or more aromatic alcohol monomers and/or non-aromatic monomers, solvent, polymerization catalyst, crosslinking agent, suspension stabilizing agent and one or more metal salts, under conditions sufficient to produce polymeric beads doped with one or more metals or salts thereof; (ii) carbonizing, activating and then reducing the polymeric beads produced in step (i) to produce metal nanoparticles-doped porous carbon beads; (iii) subjecting the metal nanoparticles-doped porous carbon beads produced in step (ii) to chemical vapour deposition in the presence of a carbon source to produce metal nanoparticles-doped porous carbon beads comprising carbon nanofibers; and (iv) doping the metal nanoparticles-doped porous carbon beads comprising carbon nanofibers produced in step (iii) with an oxidant; catalyst prepared by said process; and a process for treating waste water from an industrial process for producing propylene oxide, which process comprises subjecting the waste water to a catalytic wet oxidation treatment in the presence of said catalyst.
