The invention provides a process for the preparation of an olefinic product, the process comprising the steps of: (a) reacting an oxygenate feedstock, comprising oxygenate, in an oxygenate reaction zone in the presence of a catalyst comprising a molecular sieve, at a temperature in the range of from 350 to 1000° C., to produce a reaction effluent stream, comprising at least oxygenate, olefin, water and acidic by-products; (b) cooling the reaction effluent stream by means of an indirect heat exchange to provide a cooled reaction effluent stream at a temperature greater than the dew point temperature of reaction effluent stream; (c) passing the cooled reaction effluent stream into a quench tower and contacting the cooled reaction effluent stream with a first aqueous liquid in the presence of at least one set of quench tower internals, to produce a quench tower gaseous stream comprising the olefinic product and a quench tower liquid stream comprising condensed material; and (d) separating the quench tower liquid stream into a hydrocarbon quench tower liquid stream and an aqueous quench tower liquid stream in the presence of one or more coalescers.

The invention relates to a process for the production of ethylene oxide, comprising the steps of: producing ethylene by converting a stream comprising an oxygenate into a stream comprising ethylene and ethane; producing ethylene oxide by subjecting ethylene and ethane from the stream comprising ethylene and ethane to oxidation conditions resulting in a stream comprising ethylene oxide, unconverted ethylene and ethane; and recovering ethylene oxide from the stream comprising ethylene oxide, unconverted ethylene and ethane.

The present invention provides a process for the production of alcohols, which process comprises the steps of: (a) reacting an oxygenate and/or olefinic feed in a reactor in the presence of a molecular sieve catalyst to form an effluent comprising olefins, comprising propylene; (b) separating the effluent comprising olefins as obtained in step (a) into at least a first olefinic product fraction comprising propylene and a second olefinic product fraction; (c) subjecting at least part of the first olefinic product fraction as obtained in step (b) to a hydroformylation process to form aldehydes; (d) hydrogenating at least part of the aldehydes as obtained in step (c) to form alcohols; (e) separating at least part of the alcohols as obtained in step (d) into at least a first product fraction of alcohols and a second product fraction of alcohols; and (f) recycling at least part of the first or second product fraction of alcohols to step (a).

The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of an olefinic product, such as one or both of ethylene and propylene, from an oxygenate feedstock, such as methanol, and an apparatus therefore, said process comprising: treating an effluent stream with a carbonyl compound absorbent stream comprising an aqueous solution of bisulphite having a pH in the range of from 4 to 8, to provide an olefinic product stream comprising olefin and a loaded carbonyl compound absorbent stream comprising an aqueous solution of at least one carbonyl adduct comprising one or both of C2+ aldehyde adduct and ketone adduct and optionally unreacted bisulphite, said liquid absorbent stream and loaded carbonyl compound absorbent stream in a carbonyl compound absorbent circuit separate from the effluent separation circuit.
