    Abstract: An optical coupler includes essentially tubular second connecting piece (40). Second fiber end (14) inserts completely through second connecting piece (40) and is held rigidly such second fiber end (14) is set back from second connecting piece end (78) by a preselected distance. First essentially tubular connecting piece (16) is divided axially into first portion (30) into which first fiber end (12) is inserted and held rigidly, and second portion (32) into which second connecting piece (40) is detachably attached. First and second portions (30, 32) are arranged such that first fiber end (12) is coaxial with and in close proximity to second fiber end (14).     Abstract: A lighting system (10) suited to use in an operating theater includes one or more lightheads, each having a housing (28) and a bezel (50) extending therefrom. A light source (38) is disposed within the housing. A handle (36) extends below the bezel and is rotatable relative thereto. A lighting control input means (60), associated with the bezel allows adjustment of the intensity of light emitted by the light source. A sterile cover (54) can be placed over both the handle and the bevel, allowing the input means to be manipulated by pressure on the cover with the thumb of the operator's hand, while simultaneously grasping the handle in the palm and fingers.

    Abstract: An interface apparatus provides a sterile barrier between a sterile field and non-sterile portions of an associated surgical lighthead. The interface apparatus is a sterile disposable cover including a lower grippable portion, an intermediate cone-shaped portion, and an upper window area. The lower grippable portion is adapted to connect onto the handle portion of an associated surgical lighthead. An intermediate cone-shaped portion connects the lower grippable portion with an upper window area. The upper window area overlays control input means of the associated surgical lighthead such as, for example, light intensity controls. At least a portion of the upper window area is transparent to enable visualization of the control inputs beneath the sterile disposable cover.
