The refrigerator has a cabinet defining a storage compartment therein, and a machine room defined at a top of the cabinet. The machine room is partitioned in an interior thereof into front and rear chambers by a noise buffering plate having a plurality of vent holes. A main inlet hole and a main outlet hole are provided side-by-side at an upper surface of the front chamber of the machine room so as to allow air to circulate through the machine room. A compressor, a condenser and a cooling fan are installed in the rear chamber of the machine room.

The present invention relates to a cooling apparatus including a compressor, a condenser, a first expanding unit, a second expanding unit, a third expanding unit, a first evaporator, and a second evaporator; a first refrigerant circuit containing refrigerant discharged from the compressor and flowing into a suction side of the compressor through the condenser, the first expanding unit, the first evaporator, the second expanding unit and the second evaporator; a second refrigerant circuit containing the refrigerant passing through the condenser flowing into the suction side of the compressor through the third expanding unit and the second evaporator; a flow path control unit installed at a discharge side of the condenser, switching a refrigerant flow path so that the refrigerant passing through the condenser flows through at least one of the first and second refrigerant circuits; and a control unit selectively opening and closing the flow path control unit. The invention also relates to a method for controlling the apparatus.

A two-compartment cooling apparatus which achieves a plurality of refrigeration cycles by controlling refrigerant paths, thus increasing cooling efficiency and cooling speed of the cooling apparatus. A compressed refrigerant provided by a compressor is selectively provided to first and/or second evaporators via first, second and third expansion units and a path control unit. The path control unit controls the flow of the refrigerant through the expansion units and the evaporators to vary the cooling in the respective compartments in response to temperature measurements made in the respective compartments.
