Each cluster corresponds to a set of alphanumeric characters. The user-interface system also has cluster selection logic for receiving user actions from an input device (e.g., five-button interface) to provide visual cues to help the user select an alphanumeric cluster and to cause the selected alphanumeric cluster or character from a cluster to be displayed in a display field of the virtual user alphanumeric interface.

A method for selecting items in response to ambiguous keystrokes entered by a user and unambiguous metadata associated with a previously selected search result includes receiving ambiguous keystrokes, selecting and presenting a first subset of items and metadata associated with the items presented based on the ambiguous keystrokes. The method also includes receiving a selection of one of the items from the user, and, in response to a locking operation received from the user, locking in fixed relation at least one of the ambiguous keystrokes to at least one metadata term associated with the selected item. The method further includes, subsequent to receiving the locking operation, selecting and presenting a second subset of items based at least in part on the locked metadata term, and presenting the second subset of items.

    摘要: A method and system are provided for offsetting network latencies in an incremental processing of a search query entered by a user of a device having connectivity to a remote server over a network. The search query is directed at identifying an item from a set of items. In accordance with the method and system, data expected to be of interest to the user is stored in a local memory associated with the device. Upon receiving a key entry or a browse action entry of the search query from the user, the system searches the local memory associated with the device to identify results therein matching the key entry or browse action entry. The results identified in the local memory are displayed on a display associated with the device. Also upon receiving a key entry or a browse action entry of the search query from the user, the system sends the search query to the remote server and retrieves results from the remote server matching the key entry or browse action entry. The results from the remote server are merged with the results from the local memory for displaying on the display. The process is repeated for additional characters or browse actions entered by the user when he or she does not find the desired item on the display.

The method includes receiving incremental text input entered by a user that identifies desired items from within a relatively large search space. The method includes selecting and presenting a collection of items based on comparing the input with descriptive terms associated with the items, monitoring user selections, learning preferences of the user from the monitoring; and selecting a set of items based on comparing subsequent incremental text input entered by the user with the descriptive terms associated with the items. The method includes using a relevance function to order the set of selected items so that a relatively small number of highly relevant items may be identified and presented. The method presents the ordered results on a portion of a display device while simultaneously displaying television content on the display device.

    摘要: To reduce a delay between a time that a user of an originating mobile station (MS) requests to set up a Push-To-Talk (PTT) call and the time that the user may begin to speak, a communication system provides a ‘wake up list’ of other mobile stations (MSs) that may be awakened prior to the originating MS requesting to set up a PTT call. To further reduce the delay, the user may begin speaking prior to completion of the call setup. The speech is stored and is conveyed to a called MS when the call is setup. If the call does not get setup or a user of the called MS is not present, the stored speech may be conveyed to the called MS as a voice message. The stored speech, or new speech, may also be used as an announcement of a call instead of the typical “beep” or “chirp.”
