In this liquid crystal display device: one of an incident side polarizing plate and an exit side polarizing plate has its polarizing axis substantially coincide with the direction of the orientation of a liquid crystal layer; an optical compensating layer is interposed between at least one of transparent substrates and the incident side polarizing plate or the exit side polarizing plate both disposed outside the at least one of the transparent substrates, the optical compensating layer having a refractive index anisotropy with the other polarity other than that in the refractive index of the liquid crystal layer; and, the optical compensating layer has the direction of its anisotropy axis substantially coincide with the direction of the orientation of the liquid crystal layer, provided that the orientation direction includes a predetermined pre-tilt angle.

The first substrate includes a thin film transistor, a pixel electrode each associated to a pixel to be driven, a common electrode to which a reference voltage is applied, data lines, a scanning line, and common electrode lines. Molecular axes of liquid crystal are rotated in a plane parallel with the first substrate by an electric field substantially parallel with a plane of the first substrate to thereby display certain images. The common electrode is composed of transparent material, and are formed on a layer located closer to the liquid crystal layer than the data lines. The common electrode entirely overlaps the data lines except an area where the data lines are located in the vicinity of the scanning line. The liquid crystal display device further includes a light-impermeable layer in an area where the common electrode entirely overlaps the data lines. The light-impermeable layer is comprised of a black matrix layer having a width smaller than a width of the common electrode.

An active-matrix LCD device drives the LCD panel by using a dot reversible driving technique. The switching between two sets of input signals or two resolution modes is conducted by applying a DC voltage between the pixel electrode and the common electrode in each pixel before restart of the image display of a switched signal. The DC voltage has the same polarity among the pixels in the pixel array to thereby reduce the flicker after the restart of the image display.
