摘要： The present invention provides a liquid crystalline compound having a difluoropropyleneoxy group as a bonding group, which is represented by Formula (1): wherein R1 and R2 each independently represent hydrogen, halogen, a cyano group or an alkyl group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms; rings A1 to A5 each independently represent a 1,4-cyclohexylene group, a 1,4-cyclohexenylene group or a 1,4-phenylene group; Z1 to Z4 each independently represent a single bond, —CH2CH2—, —CH2O—, —OCH2—, —COO—, —OCO—, —CH═CH—, —C≡C—, —CF2O— or —OCF2—; Y1, Y2, Y3 and Y4 each independently represent hydrogen or fluorine; and k, l, m and n each independently represent 0 or 1. This liquid crystalline compound has a large absolute value (|&Dgr;&egr;|) of a dielectric anisotropy and shows a relatively small refractive anisotropy. The present invention further provides a liquid crystal composition comprising this compound which makes it possible to drive display elements of various modes at a low voltage, and a liquid crystal display element containing this liquid crystal composition.

The liquid crystalline compounds are terphenyl derivatives represented by general formula (1): wherein R represents a straight or branched alkyl group of 1-20 carbon atoms, and any methylene groups (—CH2—) not adjacent each other in each alkyl group may be replaced by oxygen atoms; X is a halogen atom, —OCF3, —OCF2H, —CF3, —CF2H or —CFH2; Y1, Y2, Y3, Y4, Y5 and Y6 independently represents H or F, but at least two of Y1, Y2, Y3 and Y4 represent F; and any atom constituting these compounds may be substituted by its isotope.

摘要： A liquid crystalline compound having a remarkably high .DELTA.n and good miscibility with other liquid crystalline compounds, and expressed by the general formula (1) ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 represents, for example, a halogen atom, cyano group, or an alkyl or alkenyl group of 1 to 15 carbon atoms in which alkyl or alkenyl group hydrogen atom may be replaced, for example, by fluorine atom, and one or not-adjacent two or more methylene groups may be replaced by oxygen atom, --CH.dbd.CH-- or --C.tbd.C--; R.sub.2 represents an alkyl group of 1 to 10 carbon atoms or hydrogen atom; rings A.sub.1, A.sub.2, A.sub.3, and A.sub.4 independently represent, for example, 1,4-cyclohexylene or 1,4-phenylene in which hydrogen atom may be replaced by a halogen atom or cyano group; Z.sub.1, Z.sub.2, and Z.sub.3 independently represent, for example, a covalent bond or --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --; s and t are 0 or 1; u is an integer of 1 to 5; and each of the elements in the general formula may be its isotope. A liquid crystal composition and a liquid crystal display device using the compound are also disclosed.

摘要： There are herein disclosed a fluorovinyl derivative compound represented by the general formula (1) and having characteristics of a liquid crystal, a liquid crystal composition, and a liquid crystal display device formed by using this composition: wherein R1 is an alkyl group having 1 to 18 carbon atoms, and a methylene group in the alkyl group may be substituted by an oxygen atom, a sulfur atom, —CH═CH— or —C≡C— and a hydrogen atom in the alkyl group may be substituted a halogen atom or a cyano group; rings A, B and C are each 1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-phenylene or the like in which a hydrogen atom in the ring may be substituted by a halogen atom; Z1, Z2 and Z3 are each a single bond, —CH2CH2—, —CH═CH—, —C≡C—, —CH2O—, —OCH2—, —(CH2)4—, —(CH2)3—O—, —O—(CH2)3—, —(CH2)2—CH═CH—, —CH═CH—(CH2)2—, —CF2O—, —OCF2—, —CR2═CH—, —CH═CR2— or —CF═CF—, and R2 is an alkyl group having 1 to 5 carbon atoms; X is a hydrogen atom or a fluorine atom; p and q are each 0 or 1; and m is an integer of 0 to 5.
